Whiskey Cragganmore

The origin of the name of Cragganmore Speyside whiskeys

Cragganmore was founded in 1869 by John Smith then 36 years old but already with an incredible experience built at Glenlivet, Glenfarclass, Macallan and Clydesdale a distillery which disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century. The distillery owes its name to the very mineral source where the water is drawn, the Craggan, but also from the hill from which the stones which were used to build the distillery were extracted, the Craggan Mor (large rock in gealic).

Do you know why Cragganmore whiskey is made in Ballindaloch?

The choice of the village of Ballindaloch in Banffshire could have been solely due to its source ... but John Smith was also passionate about the great novelty of the moment ... the railroad. A railroad track was being built along the Strathspey Road, and John Smith had only a few hundred yards to build to be the first to provide his distillery with the benefits of direct rail service for his supplies of water. barrels, barley and coal.

Cragganmore is away from the traditional Whiskey Trail, the Spey Valley whiskey route. Its notoriety is also due to its presence in the selection of Classic Malt which directed the spotlight on these very fine, very elegant and fruity whiskeys (apple and candied fruit). The special shape of the neck of its stills, which limits reflux as much as possible, contributes to this specificity.
