Languedoc Red Wine

Languedoc produces very great red wines!

A wide variety of terroirs, a wide variety of authorized grape varieties allows each terroir and each appellation to make the most of its possibilities. It is a vineyard in constant evolution, in constant metamorphosis, a "laboratory" vineyard from which come many innovations. The big question that every winemaker can ask is the following. Which grape variety should I plant according to the terroir at my disposal. This explains the multitude of red wine styles in Languedoc, and this also explains the magnificent world-class wines produced in this region.

the 5 main grape varieties used to make red wine in Languedoc

Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Mourvèdre, Cinsault are starting to knock on the door of the top 5. However, the star winemakers seem to concentrate on 3 grape varieties, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah.

The improvement of these wines is therefore due to a perfect adaptation of the grape varieties to the terroir but also to a great technical mastery.
and yield control. The average yield of an AZOC red wine from Languedoc is 45 hl/ha.
The Languedoc vineyard is faced with the challenges of global warming. It is hot or even very hot in summer and during the harvest, so thermal regulation methods make it possible to act during fermentation in order to preserve the freshness of the red wines produced in Languedoc. Languedoc also perfectly masters the vinification separated by grape variety and then blends these wines according to the expected result. It is also a vineyard that has been able to convert to the basic trends of organic wines, natural wines and without sulphites.

The main Languedoc appellations that produce red wines are

AOC Languedoc, Pic St Loup, La Clape, Les Grés de Montpellier, Cabardès, Corbières, Corbières-Boutenac, Costières-de-Nîmes, Faugères, Fitou, Limoux Rouge, Malepère, Minervois, Minervois La Livinière, Saint-Chinian, Larzac terraces

As far as the Languedoc-Roussillon PGIs are concerned, there are two entry keys. an IGP according to the grape variety (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Syrah, Cinsaut and Sauvignon.) used, and an IGP linked to a locality such as for example IGP Aude, IGP Cité de Carcassonne, IGP Coteaux de Peyriac ....
