Founded in 2014, Moon Harbour is located in Bordeaux's historic Bassins à flot district. The distillery uses French-made Stupfler copper stills and operates a maturation cellar inside a renovated Second World War bunker.
The Double Malt stands out through its combination of two malted grains. Corn contributes roundness and gentle sweetness, while barley introduces a complementary cereal character.
The nose offers soft grain aromas with delicate woody nuances. On the palate, the whisky is rounded, approachable and pleasantly balanced, with a smooth finish.
Bottled at 40% ABV, Moon Harbour Double Malt is an interesting introduction to contemporary French whisky.
Enjoy it neat, at room temperature, or with a few drops of water to explore its texture and subtle flavours.
Description
Moon Harbour Double Malt is a French whisky produced in Bordeaux by the innovative Moon Harbour distillery. Its distinctive character comes from combining two malted grains, corn and barley, creating a whisky that emphasises smoothness, rounded texture and gentle cereal flavours.
A distillery inspired by Bordeaux
Moon Harbour was founded in 2014 by Jean-Philippe Ballanger and Yves Médina, with the ambition of developing a whisky closely connected to Bordeaux's local heritage.
The distillery takes its name from the city's historic nickname, Port de la Lune, referring to the crescent-shaped curve of the Garonne River.
Located in the Bassins à flot district, Moon Harbour carries out the main stages of whisky production on site, from grain preparation and fermentation to distillation and maturation.
The distillery uses locally manufactured Stupfler copper stills.
Two malted grains with complementary qualities
Unlike traditional single malt whisky made exclusively from malted barley, Moon Harbour Double Malt combines malted corn with malted barley.
Corn contributes a soft, rounded character and a generous mouthfeel.
Barley adds a more pronounced cereal dimension, bringing structure and balance to the overall profile.
This combination creates a distinctive French whisky designed for an approachable and enjoyable tasting experience.
The precise proportions of the two grains have not been publicly confirmed.
An unusual maturation environment
One of Moon Harbour's most distinctive features is its ageing cellar, located inside a renovated Second World War bunker.
The building's exceptionally thick walls help provide stable conditions for whisky maturation.
The distillery is also known for using barrels previously employed by prestigious Bordeaux wine estates.
However, the specific cask composition and ageing duration of this Double Malt expression have not been confirmed.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
Moon Harbour Double Malt offers a gentle cereal-driven nose with subtle woody impressions.
The palate is rounded and generous, highlighting the natural softness associated with malted corn and the complementary character of barley.
Its smooth, balanced finish makes it suitable for both curious newcomers and enthusiasts exploring French whisky.
Serve neat in a tulip-shaped glass, or add a few drops of water to appreciate its texture.
It can also be enjoyed alongside roasted almonds, dried fruits or milk chocolate.
