The Isabel Ferrando Family, Châteauneuf-du-Pape: a great organic and biodynamic red wine

The history of the Isabel Ferrando family is closely linked to that of Domaine Saint Préfert, an estate situated south of the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Isabel Ferrando took over the estate in the early 2000s and produced her first vintage in 2003. She then undertook a major project to restore and enhance the estate’s various terroirs, giving rise to several historic cuvées before bringing this experience together in a new blended cuvée. Since 2020, the estate has been known as the Isabel Ferrando Family.

The vineyard is managed according to the principles of organic and biodynamic farming: organic certification was obtained in 2013, followed by biodynamic certification in 2020. This approach is accompanied by significant work on biodiversity, notably through the hedgerows and nesting boxes on the estate, as well as a mass selection conservatory designed to preserve the estate’s plant heritage.

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red cuvée is sourced from various lieux-dits within the Saint Préfert terroir. The soils consist of a mixture of rounded pebbles, gravel, blue clay and sand. This geological diversity lends the wine depth, freshness and complexity. Grenache brings the sensuality and generosity characteristic of great southern reds, whilst Syrah contributes to the texture and precision. Mourvèdre enhances the length and ageing potential, whilst Cinsault brings finesse, floral notes and delicacy.

Tasting reveals a complex and expressive nose dominated by black fruits, with hints of strawberry and fig. On the palate, the wine is smooth, full-bodied and silky. The attack is firm, the mid-palate taut and finely defined, leading to a long finish underpinned by a subtle, noble bitterness. Ageing in two-wine casks and amphorae complements the wine’s body without masking the expression of the terroir.
