The Isle of Jura located in the northwest of Scotland in the Hebrides archipelago is one of the wildest islands in Scotland. It houses the eponymous Isle of Jura distillery in the large village of Craighouse. With its 180 to 200 inhabitants on the island, the distillery is at the heart of the island's activity, including with its tourist benefits. Tourists are also attracted by the fantastic landscape of high mountains (nothing to do with the Jura mountains in France) and its 5 to 6000 deer which mainly inhabit Jura. The name of the island comes from the translation of the word Cerf or Daim in Celtic language.

Georges Orwell lived from 1946 to 1948 on the Isle of Jura at the Barnhill farm. He took advantage of the surrounding calm to put the finishing touches to his 1984 novel. He had no time to taste Ilse of Jura since the distillery only resumed activity from 1963.
