Hautefeuille Single Farm Lightly Peated is a French single malt whisky produced at Distillerie d'Hautefeuille in Beaucourt-en-Santerre, in the Hauts-de-France region.
This limited edition was created from a selection of eight oak casks, yielding just 3,400 bottles.
The whisky is made exclusively from barley grown on the family's own farmland, reflecting the distillery's commitment to agricultural provenance.
After fermentation and distillation, the spirit is matured in oak casks, developing a balance between cereal flavours and delicate smoky notes.
The nose reveals grain aromas, gentle smoke and subtle hints of leather and woodland.
On the palate, the whisky is rich and rounded, with the natural sweetness of malt gradually giving way to fine peat smoke.
The finish is fresh and gently smoky, maintaining an elegant balance between grain and peat.
Bottled at 43.3% ABV, this French single malt is best enjoyed neat, at approximately 16–18°C.
Its restrained peat character makes it an interesting introduction to lightly smoky whiskies.
Description
Hautefeuille Single Farm Lightly Peated is a French single malt whisky produced in Picardy, in the northern part of France.
The distillery is located in Beaucourt-en-Santerre, in the Somme department, on a family-owned agricultural estate with a long history of cereal cultivation.
Distillerie d'Hautefeuille was established in 2016, following the development of a project led by Étienne d'Hautefeuille to transform locally grown grain into distinctive French spirits.
The distillery's approach places particular importance on the origin of its raw materials.
For the Single Farm range, the barley used in whisky production is grown exclusively on the family's own land.
This agricultural connection is central to the identity of the whisky, allowing the producer to maintain a close relationship between cereal cultivation and spirit production.
The barley is processed into malt, which is then used to produce a fermentable liquid.
Following fermentation, distillation takes place using a Stupfler still, selected for its ability to produce aromatic spirits.
The resulting new-make spirit is transferred into oak casks for maturation.
The Lightly Peated expression combines the cereal character of the malt with a restrained smoky influence.
Rather than pursuing the intense medicinal or maritime peat aromas associated with certain heavily peated Scotch whiskies, Hautefeuille focuses on a more delicate interpretation.
The smoke is intended to complement the natural grain flavours rather than dominate them.
This particular edition was created from an assemblage of eight casks.
The resulting production was limited to 3,400 bottles, making it a small-batch expression within the distillery's range.
In appearance, the whisky has a pale golden colour.
The nose opens with cereal aromas and a gentle, diffuse smoke.
Hints of leather and woodland provide additional aromatic complexity, creating a distinctive combination of grain and earthy notes.
On the palate, the whisky offers a rich and rounded texture.
The initial impression is dominated by the natural sweetness of malt, followed by a gradual development of delicate peat smoke.
The smoky character remains measured, allowing the cereal flavours to retain their importance throughout the tasting.
The finish is fresh and gently peated, with a balanced persistence.
Bottled at 43.3% alcohol by volume, Hautefeuille Single Farm Lightly Peated can be enjoyed neat at approximately 16–18°C.
Its subtle smoke makes it suitable for pairing with oysters, seafood or lightly smoked fish.
These combinations highlight the whisky's freshness while allowing its grain and peat aromas to develop.
This expression represents a distinctive example of contemporary French single malt production, combining estate-grown barley, small-batch cask selection and a delicate approach to peat.
