Domaine Le Capitaine Cuvée Adrien is an off-dry white wine from the Vouvray appellation in France's Loire Valley. Produced in Rochecorbon, near Tours, it is made exclusively from Chenin Blanc grapes.
The vineyards occupy limestone-rich hillsides overlooking the Loire River. The soils combine tuffeau limestone with clay formations, contributing to the distinctive character of Vouvray wines.
Cuvée Adrien is vinified in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation is carefully managed to retain a small proportion of the grapes' natural sugars, generally between 9 and 18 grams per litre according to the cuvée's technical information.
The wine is subsequently aged on fine lees for six to nine months, without malolactic fermentation.
Its aromatic profile combines ripe peach, pineapple and citrus fruit with a delicate hint of cinnamon.
The palate is rounded and gently off-dry, balanced by Chenin Blanc's natural acidity. The finish is fresh and persistent.
Served at 10–12°C, this Vouvray pairs well with salmon tartare, fruit-based desserts, apple crumble and peach Melba.
Description
Cuvée Adrien is an off-dry Vouvray white wine produced by Domaine Le Capitaine, a family-owned estate located in Rochecorbon, near Tours in the Loire Valley.
The estate was established in 1988 by Alain Le Capitaine, who began with a small family vineyard measuring just 0.25 hectares.
His brother Christophe joined the business in 1995, followed by Florian Le Capitaine in 2013, after completing studies in viticulture and oenology.
The family gradually expanded its vineyards on the first slopes of Rochecorbon, an area known for producing distinctive Chenin Blanc wines.
The Vouvray appellation lies on the northern bank of the Loire River, where the vineyards benefit from a combination of oceanic and continental climatic influences.
The river helps moderate local temperatures, while the surrounding valleys and slopes create varied growing conditions.
The geological foundation of the vineyards is tuffeau, a porous limestone characteristic of the Touraine region. The surface soils also contain clay, including the local formations known as aubuis and perruches.
Chenin Blanc is the exclusive grape variety used for Cuvée Adrien. It is particularly well suited to producing wines with varying degrees of sweetness because of its ability to retain natural acidity.
The grapes are pressed promptly after harvesting. The juice is clarified and vinified in stainless steel tanks, with separate treatment of individual vineyard parcels.
Fermentation is carefully controlled over approximately two to three months. It is stopped before all the natural grape sugars have been converted into alcohol.
The technical information for this cuvée indicates a residual sugar level generally ranging from 9 to 18 grams per litre.
This relatively modest sweetness distinguishes the wine from richer, dessert-style Vouvray expressions.
The wine is then matured on fine lees for six to nine months. Malolactic fermentation is avoided to help preserve its natural freshness.
The finished Cuvée Adrien offers aromas of ripe peach and pineapple, complemented by citrus fruit and a subtle hint of cinnamon.
On the palate, the texture is smooth and rounded. The residual sweetness is balanced by the lively acidity associated with Chenin Blanc.
The finish is persistent, combining ripe fruit with a refreshing citrus impression.
This balance makes Cuvée Adrien suitable for a variety of food pairings. The producer recommends dishes such as salmon tartare with tropical fruit, apple crumble with cinnamon, peach and apricot sorbets, and fruit-based desserts.
A serving temperature of 10–12°C allows the wine's fruit aromas and fresh acidity to remain expressive.
Cuvée Adrien illustrates the versatility of Chenin Blanc and the traditional off-dry style of Vouvray, combining ripe fruit, moderate sweetness and the freshness of the Loire Valley.
