Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey’s Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot 2023 is made exclusively from Chardonnay, the iconic grape variety behind Burgundy’s greatest white wines. Hailing from the prestigious Abbaye de Morgeot vineyard, it expresses the full richness of the clay-limestone soils. Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, renowned for his meticulous winemaking, has crafted an elegant wine with aromas of lemon, pear, white flowers, apricot and flint. On the palate, it combines power, tension and minerality in a long, refined finish. A great white wine, ideal with lobster, fine fish and poultry in a creamy sauce.
Description
The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot 2023 perfectly exemplifies the style of Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, regarded by many wine enthusiasts as one of Burgundy’s most talented winemakers. After working at the family estate, Marc Colin, he founded his own estate in 2005 with his wife, Caroline Morey. Since then, his wines have been sought after worldwide for their precision, purity and exceptional ability to convey the nuances of each terroir.
Made exclusively from Chardonnay grown on the clay-limestone soils of the Abbaye de Morgeot climat, this Premier Cru benefits from old vines harvested by hand. The winemaking process emphasises the finesse of the fruit, followed by ageing for 12 to 14 months in oak barrels with a moderate proportion of new oak to preserve the terroir’s identity.
The pale gold colour is followed by a complex nose where candied lemon, Comice pear, fresh apricot, white flowers, flint, chalk and subtle buttery notes intertwine. On the palate, the wine impresses with its balance between fullness and tension. The texture is silky, underpinned by a refined minerality and remarkable freshness that carry the flavours through to a long, briny and lingering finish.
Served at between 12 and 13 °C, this great Chardonnay is the ideal accompaniment to roast lobster, scallops, fine fish in sauce, Bresse poultry in cream sauce or a morel risotto. With an ageing potential of over ten years, it will develop, over time, notes of honey, dried fruit and brioche – characteristics typical of the finest Chassagne-Montrachets.
