The XXI 2021 cuvée from Domaine Didier Dagueneau occupies a special place among the estate’s white wines. The spring frost of 2021 severely affected the vineyard, leaving a much smaller harvest than usual. In response, Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau brought together the available production in one wine, combining grapes from plots normally vinified separately.

Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, XXI is classified as Vin de France. Its designation reflects the category under which the wine is marketed, while its Loire Valley origins and the estate’s distinctive approach remain central to its identity. Rather than representing a standard expression of one vineyard, this cuvée captures the character of several plots in a single bottle.

Aromatic complexity is one of its defining features. Floral notes of elderflower and lemon blossom mingle with fresh herbs, green apple, vine peach and grapefruit. The palate is lively and focused, combining bright citrus acidity with a concentrated core and a fine, silky texture. A saline edge and subtle bitterness bring definition to the finish.

The wine benefits from an ageing period of around twelve months in barrels and oval wooden vats. This contributes depth and texture while preserving the freshness expected from Sauvignon Blanc. Decanting for approximately an hour may help the wine open up, particularly when it initially appears restrained.

XXI 2021 is well suited to scallops, langoustines, shellfish and premium white fish. Roasted turbot or fish served with a delicate citrus-based sauce would make particularly fitting pairings.
