Domaine Pluchot Organic Red Wine from the Côte Roannaise: freshness, fruit and granitic terroir

‘Le Retour aux Sources’ is an iconic wine from Domaine Pluchot, based in Saint-Alban-les-Eaux in the heart of the Côte Roannaise wine region. Founded by Edgar and Marc-Antoine Pluchot, the estate was born out of a desire to build a family-run, independent wine-growing business centred on their grandparents’ land. The two brothers have gradually expanded their vineyard to around 8 hectares, producing red and rosé wines under the Côte Roannaise AOC.

This cuvée is made from Gamay Saint-Romain, the appellation’s iconic grape variety. The Côte Roannaise has a distinct identity within the French wine-growing landscape: situated in the north of the Loire, it stretches across the foothills of the Monts de la Madeleine, with many plots situated at altitudes of between 400 and 500 metres. The granitic soils and semi-continental climate contribute to giving the wines a fresh, fruity and lively character.

Domaine Pluchot’s organic approach forms part of a comprehensive commitment to respecting the terroir. The Pluchot brothers, in particular, work their soils and use green manure, with a view to preserving the life and balance of the vineyard. The estate is now recognised as an organic vineyard by key players in the wine industry and the local wine tourism sector.

In the glass, ‘Le Retour aux Sources’ showcases the Gamay’s delicious character. The wine is fruity, fresh and mineral, with a supple texture that makes it particularly easy to enjoy. Its style makes it an excellent accompaniment to cold meats, poultry, creamy cheeses and simple meals. It can also be served slightly chilled to emphasise its thirst-quenching quality.

At around 13 °C, this cuvée fully reveals its balance between fruit and freshness. Le Retour aux Sources is therefore a wonderful introduction to the red wines of the Côte Roannaise and Gamay Saint-Romain.
