Château Ballan Larquette: A red Bordeaux dominated by Merlot
Château Ballan Larquette Rouge is produced by Vignobles Chaigne & Fils, a family-owned estate situated in Saint-Laurent-du-Bois, in the Entre-deux-Mers region. Its distinctive character lies in particular in a blend of three grape varieties, grown on south-facing clay-limestone slopes.
The blend comprises 55 per cent Merlot, 30 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and 15 per cent Malbec. Merlot thus accounts for more than half of the blend. The other two grape varieties complement the profile sought by the producer, contributing their own distinctive characteristics to the wine’s balance.
The estate describes this cuvée as a fruity, powerful and elegant red, intended to age well in the bottle. However, the specific aromatic characteristics and tannin levels cannot be specified without confirmed tasting notes for the vintage in question.
For food pairings, the producer recommends red meats, game, pork fillet and poultry. Roasted or grilled meat is a natural pairing with the stated style of this cuvée.
Château Ballan Larquette is therefore distinguished by the high proportion of Merlot in its blend and by the clay-limestone soil of its vineyard.
Description
Château Ballan Larquette Bordeaux Red: clay-limestone terroir and a Bordeaux blend
Château Ballan Larquette Bordeaux Red is produced by Vignobles Chaigne & Fils in Saint-Laurent-du-Bois, in the Gironde. Situated in the Entre-deux-Mers region, this family-run estate produces this cuvée from an 18-hectare vineyard situated on south-facing clay-limestone slopes.
The blend comprises three grape varieties: 55 per cent Merlot, 30 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and 15 per cent Malbec. Merlot forms the basis of the blend, accounting for a higher proportion than the other two varieties combined. Cabernet Sauvignon is traditionally associated with the tannic structure and ageing potential of Bordeaux red wines. Malbec, for its part, can contribute to the colour and intensity of the fruit profile. How these characteristics actually express themselves depends in particular on the vintage and the winemaking conditions.
The producer describes Château Ballan Larquette as a wine combining fruitiness, power and elegance. They also highlight its ageing potential. However, the exact ageing potential cannot be determined without knowing the vintage and storage conditions.
To accompany this red Bordeaux, the estate recommends pairing it with red meats, game, pork fillet and poultry. A grilled cut of beef or a roast would, in particular, provide a pairing that is consistent with the wine’s stated style.
The clay-limestone terroir and the vineyard’s southerly exposure are key elements defining this cuvée’s identity. They complement the blend of grape varieties to characterise the work of Vignobles Chaigne & Fils within the Bordeaux appellation.
