Domaine Tempier La Tourtine 2023: an exceptional terroir for Mourvèdre

Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge La Tourtine 2023 is a major single-vineyard cuvée from the Bandol appellation. It originates from a 5.5-hectare plot situated on a high hillside near the village of Le Castellet. Very sunny and particularly windy, this site allows the grapes to reach excellent ripeness whilst retaining freshness and balance.

The deep soils consist of sandstone and marl dating from the Santonian period, with a high clay content and some gypsum. This geological richness plays a key role in the wine’s complex character and ageing potential.

The blend is largely dominated by Mourvèdre, accounting for around 85 per cent – the emblematic grape variety of Bandol’s great red wines. It brings depth, tannic structure, notes of black fruit, spices and garrigue, as well as remarkable ageing potential. Grenache rounds out the blend with its generosity and fruity expression, whilst Cinsault brings finesse, suppleness and elegance.

The grapes are carefully sorted in the vineyard and then in the cellar. After destemming and crushing, fermentation lasts around three to four weeks, driven by indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for at least 18 months in large oak casks, allowing the tannins to soften without masking the expression of the terroir.

On the palate, La Tourtine 2023 reveals notes of black fruits, blackberry, blackcurrant, spices, liquorice and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is deep, structured and elegant, with lovely freshness.

This great red Bandol from Domaine Tempier will pair perfectly with a rib of beef, a leg of lamb, duck breast, game or hearty Provençal cuisine.
