Auchentoshan 12 Year Old is a Scottish single malt whisky produced near Glasgow in the Lowlands region of Scotland.
Established in 1823, Auchentoshan Distillery is particularly known for its triple distillation process, which distinguishes it from most Scottish single malt producers.
Made exclusively from malted barley, the whisky is distilled three times in copper pot stills before being matured for at least twelve years.
Its maturation combines American oak casks previously used for bourbon with Spanish Oloroso sherry casks.
The resulting whisky offers a delicate balance of citrus fruit, vanilla, nuts and gentle oak.
On the nose, sweet pastry and crème brûlée aromas accompany citrus zest, hazelnut and fresh green notes.
The palate is smooth, with flavours of tangerine, lime and vanilla. A subtle nutty character adds depth.
The finish is slightly dry, revealing ginger spice and lingering hazelnut.
Bottled at 40% ABV, Auchentoshan 12 Year Old can be enjoyed neat, with a few drops of water or over ice.
Description
Auchentoshan 12 Year Old is a single malt Scotch whisky produced at Auchentoshan Distillery in Clydebank, near Glasgow, Scotland.
The distillery was established in 1823 and belongs to the Lowlands whisky region, which covers the southern part of mainland Scotland.
Auchentoshan is particularly recognised for its use of triple distillation, a production method more commonly associated with Irish whiskey than with Scottish single malts.
Most Scotch single malt distilleries use two copper pot stills in sequence. Auchentoshan employs three successive distillation stages to produce a relatively light and refined new-make spirit.
The process begins with malted barley, which is milled and mixed with hot water to extract fermentable sugars.
The resulting liquid is fermented before undergoing distillation in copper pot stills.
The third distillation increases the alcoholic strength of the new-make spirit and helps shape Auchentoshan's distinctive character.
The spirit is then matured in oak casks for at least twelve years.
Auchentoshan 12 Year Old combines maturation in American oak ex-bourbon casks and Spanish Oloroso sherry casks.
These different cask types contribute complementary aromatic characteristics.
American oak previously used for bourbon can develop vanilla, caramel and sweet pastry notes, while sherry-seasoned oak contributes nutty, fruity and spicy nuances.
The finished whisky has a golden appearance.
Its nose opens with aromas of sweet pastry and crème brûlée, followed by citrus zest and hazelnut.
Fresh green notes provide a contrast to the sweeter aromatic elements.
On the palate, Auchentoshan 12 Year Old displays a smooth texture and a combination of vanilla, tangerine and lime.
The citrus flavours contribute freshness, while hazelnut and oak provide additional complexity.
The finish is gently drying, with ginger spice and a lingering nutty character.
At 40% alcohol by volume, this whisky offers a relatively delicate expression of twelve-year-old Scotch single malt.
It can be enjoyed neat in a tulip-shaped whisky glass, allowing the citrus, pastry and nut aromas to develop.
A small addition of water may reveal different aromatic nuances, while serving the whisky over ice provides a cooler tasting experience.
Auchentoshan 12 Year Old illustrates the distillery's characteristic approach to whisky production, combining triple distillation with maturation in bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks.
