A 13-year-old AULTMORE enhanced by a red wine cask

With this 2009 release, Thompson Bros showcases a unique facet of the Aultmore distillery. This Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky was distilled in May 2009, then left to mature for 13 years in a red wine cask. The bottling, carried out in August 2022, has resulted in a limited edition of 285 bottles, at 50% ABV.

The choice of cask plays a key role in the character of this release. Whilst bourbon casks often impart notes of vanilla and coconut, wood that has previously contained red wine can enhance the expression of red and black fruits, as well as certain spicy nuances. The result, however, depends on the interaction between the original whisky, the wood and the length of maturation.

On tasting, the flavour profile is rich and expressive. Red fruits are accompanied by notes of honey, spiced biscuits and vanilla. On the palate, figs, raisins and chocolate mingle with a hint of cinnamon and a malty sweetness. The finish prolongs the fruity impressions, with a spicy presence that lends it length.

This whisky is aimed at single malt enthusiasts who appreciate limited editions and less conventional maturation choices. It can be enjoyed on its own, during an evening dedicated to independent whiskies, or as part of a comparison between an Aultmore matured in red wine casks and another matured in bourbon casks.

Serve it at room temperature in a suitable glass, in small quantities, to allow the aromas to develop. Its 70 cl bottle and limited production run of just 285 bottles also make it an attractive prospect for collectors of Scotch whiskies.
