Santa Teresa 1796 Irish Whiskey Cask Finish is a limited-edition Venezuelan aged rum created in collaboration with the Irish whiskey distillery Teeling, based in Dublin.
Produced at Hacienda Santa Teresa in Venezuela, this expression builds upon the renowned Santa Teresa 1796 rum, traditionally aged using the house's distinctive Solera process.
The rum receives an additional ten-month finish in oak casks previously used to mature Teeling Irish whiskey.
This finishing period introduces subtle malt, floral and spicy characteristics while preserving the rum's signature richness.
The nose reveals vanilla, gentle spices, cooked fruit and delicate floral aromas.
On the palate, caramel, honey and dried fruit combine with soft oak and a subtle malted cereal influence.
The finish is long and balanced, with lingering vanilla, spice and woody notes.
Bottled at 45% ABV in a 70cl bottle, this limited release is best enjoyed neat or over a large ice cube.
It is particularly appealing to enthusiasts of both aged rum and Irish whiskey.
Description
A Collaboration Between Venezuela and Ireland
Santa Teresa 1796 Irish Whiskey Cask Finish 70cl is a limited-edition rum developed through a collaboration between Hacienda Santa Teresa and Teeling Whiskey.
Hacienda Santa Teresa is located in Aragua, Venezuela, and traces its history to 1796.
The Teeling distillery, based in Dublin, is known for exploring distinctive cask maturation techniques.
This release combines the established Santa Teresa 1796 ageing process with an additional finish in Irish whiskey casks.
A Traditional Molasses-Based Rum
Santa Teresa 1796 is produced from sugar cane molasses.
Its character comes from blending different styles of aged rum and bringing them together through the distillery's Solera-inspired maturation system.
The process is designed to develop balance, aromatic complexity and consistency.
Four Stages of Maturation
The individual rum components first undergo separate ageing.
They are subsequently blended and introduced into the Santa Teresa Solera system, where spirits of different maturities are combined.
Further maturation in French oak vats helps harmonise the blend.
For this special edition, the finished rum spends an additional ten months in oak barrels previously used for Teeling Irish whiskey.
The casks contribute gentle malted cereal notes, additional spice and subtle floral characteristics.
The resulting spirit remains Venezuelan rum rather than a mixture of rum and whiskey.
Appearance and Tasting Notes
The rum displays an amber colour with copper highlights.
The nose opens with vanilla, cooked fruit and sweet spices, followed by delicate floral aromas.
On the palate, caramel and honey are complemented by dried fruit, toasted oak and a light malt influence.
The texture is rounded, with enough structure to support the aromatic richness.
The finish is persistent, combining vanilla, gentle spices and refined woody notes.
Serving Suggestions
Santa Teresa 1796 Teeling Cask Finish is particularly enjoyable neat in a tulip-shaped glass.
Allow the rum to rest briefly before tasting to appreciate its aromatic complexity.
It can also be served over a large ice cube or used in a Rum Old Fashioned.
Dark chocolate, toasted nuts and caramel-based desserts provide complementary food pairings.
A Distinctive Limited Release
Bottled at 45% ABV, this expression offers a different interpretation of the classic Santa Teresa 1796.
Its ten-month Irish whiskey cask finish makes it an interesting addition to collections of Venezuelan rum and innovative cask-finished spirits.
