With ASTA ILA 12 Years Old, Asta Morris offers a unique expression of Islay whisky. This independent Belgian company, founded by Bert Bruyneel, specialises in selecting casks with a distinctive aromatic character. The name ASTA ILA evokes the world of whiskies from the Scottish island renowned for its smoky, peaty single malts, whilst the original distillery remains undisclosed for this release.

Distilled in 2008 and bottled in 2021 after 12 years of maturation, this Single Malt Scotch Whisky comes from cask number AM141, a sherry butt. This type of large-capacity cask, traditionally used for ageing sherry, can impart notes of dried fruit, spices and wood to the whisky. The release has been bottled at 52% ABV, without chill filtration or the addition of colouring, in order to preserve its natural character. Total production is limited to 732 bottles of 70 cl.

The nose reveals a distinct peaty smokiness, accompanied by maritime notes, citrus and vanilla. Upon aeration, hints of dried fruit and wood may emerge. The palate is powerful and well-structured, blending smoke, spices, malt and hints of sherry. The long, lingering finish carries through the peaty and briny notes.

To fully appreciate its complexity, enjoy ASTA ILA in a tulip-shaped glass, allowing it to breathe for a few minutes. Its 52% ABV allows for the addition of a few drops of water to reveal further nuances. This limited edition will particularly appeal to Islay whisky enthusiasts seeking a balance between peat, sherry influence and independent bottling.
