La Pousse d’Or Volnay Premier Cru Clos des 60 Ouvrées 2021
Domaine de la Pousse d’Or Clos des 60 Ouvrées 2021 is a prestigious red Burgundy from Volnay, in the Côte de Beaune. The wine comes from a 2.39-hectare walled vineyard within the renowned Les Caillerets Premier Cru. This plot is a monopole, meaning it is entirely owned by the estate.
The vineyard is planted exclusively with Pinot Noir on limestone-rich marl and clay-limestone scree. Some of the vines date back to the 1950s, contributing to the distinctive identity of this historic parcel.
The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo carefully managed fermentation. The wine is then aged for 15 months in oak barrels, approximately 30% of which are new.
The 2021 vintage offers aromas of blackcurrant, sour cherry, liquorice, fresh rose and sweet spices. Its concentrated palate combines generous fruit with substantial tannins and a persistent finish.
This Premier Cru is an excellent choice for collectors and Burgundy enthusiasts looking for a structured, age-worthy Pinot Noir. It pairs particularly well with roasted game birds, duck and refined meat dishes.
Description
Volnay Premier Cru Clos des 60 Ouvrées 2021: A Historic Burgundy Monopole
The 2021 Volnay Premier Cru Clos des 60 Ouvrées from Domaine de la Pousse d’Or is an exceptional expression of Pinot Noir from Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. This wine comes from a historic 2.39-hectare monopole vineyard situated within Les Caillerets, one of Volnay’s most respected Premier Cru sites.
The vineyard lies south of the village, close to Meursault, and is entirely enclosed by traditional dry-stone walls. Its eastern exposure and distinctive geology contribute to its character. The underlying soils contain limestone-rich marl from the Argovian period, together with areas of Bathonian clay-limestone scree.
The vines are exclusively Pinot Noir, with a significant proportion planted in the 1950s. The grapes are harvested by hand, carefully sorted and completely destemmed. Winemaking includes approximately seven days of cold maceration before fermentation, followed by an extended vatting period of around three weeks. The wine is then matured on its lees for 15 months in oak barrels, with approximately 30% new wood.
The 2021 vintage displays an expressive bouquet of blackcurrant, sour cherry and liquorice. Fresh rose petals and sweet spices add complexity as the wine opens in the glass. The palate is concentrated and generous, with substantial tannins and a long, structured finish. This depth distinguishes Clos des 60 Ouvrées from lighter interpretations of Volnay.
Its structure and balance make it suitable for extended cellaring. With appropriate storage, the wine can develop additional complexity as its youthful fruit gradually evolves towards more mature, savoury aromas.
For food pairing, consider roasted pigeon, quail, duck breast or feathered game. Dishes featuring mushrooms, reduced meat sauces or delicate spices can also complement its aromatic profile. Serving the wine at approximately 16–17°C is recommended, and opening the bottle in advance can help reveal its full expression.
