A little history! Karukera rum is an integral part of the historical and cultural heritage of Guadeloupe. More than five hundred years ago, Christopher Columbus landed at St. Mary's - in November 1493 - on the windward coast of this beautiful virgin butterfly-shaped land. This island is then inhabited by the Caribbean Indians who call it Karukera 'The Island of Beautiful Waters'. It is on this very place that is the oldest distillery in activity of Guadeloupe. Nestled in the heart of the Domaine du Marquisat of Sainte-Marie, the Esperance distillery where since 1895 produced exceptional rums from the distillation of pure sugar cane juice. It is at the heart of this place steeped in history that Karukera today produces the Karukera agricultural rums known for their high quality.
