Lemorton Hors d’Âge 20 Year Old Calvados
Lemorton Hors d’Âge 20 Year Old Calvados is produced by a family estate in Mantilly, in Normandy’s Domfrontais region. The house is known for its aged Calvados and for using a high proportion of pears in its distilling fruit: approximately 70% pears and 30% apples. This pear-led approach gives Lemorton spirits a distinctive connection to the local orchard tradition.
After distillation, the spirit is matured in oak casks. With twenty years of ageing, this expression has spent a long period developing through contact with the wood. The producer describes its Calvados style as fresh, lively and dry, with notes that can include spices, caramelised vanilla, honey and hazelnut. These are general tasting characteristics provided by the estate rather than a confirmed, bottle-specific tasting note.
Bottled at 40% ABV in a 70 cl format, this aged Calvados is suited to slow, neat enjoyment at room temperature. It can be served as an after-dinner digestif or paired with apple and pear desserts. A few moments in the glass can help the aromas open up during tasting.
Description
Lemorton Hors d’Âge 20 Year Old: an aged Calvados from Domfrontais
The Lemorton family estate is based in Mantilly, in the Domfrontais area of Normandy. Passed down through generations, the farm specialises in aged Calvados and produces cider, perry and pommeau alongside its eaux-de-vie. Its traditional tall-stemmed apple and pear orchards supply fruit for the cider and perry that form the basis of its spirits.
Lemorton’s distinctive approach uses approximately 70% pears and 30% apples in the fruit destined for distillation. This high proportion of pears reflects the Domfrontais region’s long-standing perry tradition and gives the producer’s Calvados its particular identity. The Domfrontais appellation also requires a minimum proportion of perry pears and uses a single distillation in a column still.
Following distillation, the spirit is aged in oak casks. This Hors d’Âge expression has a stated age of twenty years, allowing it to develop over an extended period in wood. The estate describes the general style of its Calvados as fresh, lively and dry, with possible notes of spice, caramelised vanilla, honey and hazelnut. These are the producer’s broader tasting references rather than a definitive tasting note for this particular bottle.
Bottled at 40% ABV in a 70 cl format, Lemorton Hors d’Âge 20 Year Old is best enjoyed neat at room temperature as an after-dinner digestif. It pairs naturally with apple or pear desserts, dried fruit or lightly sweetened pastries. Taking time over the glass allows the spirit’s aromas to develop gradually.
For enthusiasts of traditional French spirits, this bottle offers a way to explore the farm-produced heritage of Domfrontais and the distinctive role of pears in aged Calvados.
