Lemorton 15 Year Old Calvados – Farm-produced Domfrontais
Lemorton 15 Year Old Calvados is a farm-produced Normandy spirit from the family estate in Mantilly, in the Domfrontais area of the Orne department. The estate is known for its pear-led approach to Calvados: approximately 70% of the fruit used for its distilling ciders consists of pears, with the remaining 30% made up of apples. Traditional tall-stemmed pear and apple trees are an important part of the estate’s orchard heritage.
The spirit is distilled from cider and perry and matured in oak casks. With fifteen years of ageing, it has had time to evolve and develop additional complexity through contact with the wood. The Lemorton family specialises in older Domfrontais Calvados, a style in which pear plays a particularly important role.
Bottled at 40% ABV in a 70 cl format, this Calvados is best enjoyed neat at room temperature as an after-dinner digestif. It can also be paired with apple or pear desserts, especially baked fruit and caramelised pastries.
Description
Lemorton 15 Year Old Calvados: a farm-made spirit from Domfrontais
Lemorton 15 Year Old Calvados is produced at the family estate in Mantilly, in the Orne department of Normandy. The estate specialises in older Domfrontais Calvados and maintains traditional tall-stemmed apple and pear orchards. Fruit from the farm is used to make the cider and perry that provide the base for distillation, connecting the finished spirit directly to the estate’s agricultural heritage.
The house’s Calvados is notable for its high proportion of pears, approximately 70%, alongside 30% apples. This pear-led composition is a defining feature of Lemorton and reflects the Domfrontais tradition. The Calvados Domfrontais appellation requires at least 30% perry pears among the fruit used, while Lemorton’s stated proportion is considerably higher. The result is a spirit rooted in a region where both cider and perry have a long history.
After distillation, the Calvados is matured in oak casks. This 15-year-old expression has spent fifteen years ageing before bottling, allowing time for the spirit to develop through contact with the wood. Older Domfrontais Calvados can evolve from fresh fruit aromas towards more mature notes associated with dried fruit, pastry and spice. These are characteristics of the broader style rather than confirmed tasting notes specific to this bottle.
Bottled at 40% ABV in a 70 cl format, Lemorton 15 Year Old is suited to slow, neat enjoyment at room temperature, particularly as an after-dinner digestif. It can also be served alongside apple tart, pear desserts or caramelised pastries. For enthusiasts of traditional French spirits, it offers a way to explore farm-produced Calvados and the distinctive role of pears in the Domfrontais region.
