Appleton Estate Hearts Collection 1993: 29 years of tropical ageing

The Appleton Estate Hearts Collection 1993–2022 is a collectible Jamaican rum that showcases the richness of Jamaica’s traditional spirits. Distilled in 1993 in the pot stills at the Appleton Estate distillery, it underwent twenty-nine years of tropical ageing before being bottled in 2022. This extended ageing gives it a powerful character, marked by woody notes and remarkable aromatic complexity.

A collaboration between Joy Spence and Luca Gargano

The Hearts Collection was born out of a collaboration between Joy Spence, Appleton Estate’s iconic master blender, and Luca Gargano, founder of Velier and a renowned specialist in characterful rums. This range showcases 100% Pot Still rums, sourced from a single production batch, or ‘single mark’. This traditional method produces expressive distillates, rich in aromas and endowed with their own distinct identity.

For this 1993 edition, thirteen casks numbered from 413487 to 413499 were selected. They have given rise to a limited production run of just 3,600 bottles worldwide.

A deep, oaky aromatic profile

The nose reveals notes of nutmeg, cinnamon and mint, accompanied by hints of caramel, vanilla and toasted oak. Upon aeration, aromas of ripe fruit, cocoa and tobacco may round out the bouquet. On the palate, the rum is powerful, with a dry, oaky structure, pronounced spices and roasted notes. The finish is long, lingering and slightly minty, with a distinct oak presence.

A rare rum to be savoured with patience

Bottled at 63% ABV, this rum is aimed at discerning connoisseurs. It is best served neat, at room temperature, in a tulip-shaped glass. A few minutes’ aeration allows the aromas to open up; a few drops of water can also soften the alcohol’s intensity and reveal further nuances.
