Saint Joseph Rouge ‘Les Sérines’ 2021 Red Wine by Yves Cuilleron 75 cl

Yves Cuilleron Les Sérines 2021: A Fine Saint-Joseph Syrah

Yves Cuilleron Saint-Joseph Les Sérines 2021 is a prestigious red wine from the Northern Rhône Valley, produced exclusively from Syrah grapes.

This age-worthy cuvée comes from old vines growing on shallow granite soils within the Saint-Joseph appellation.

The name Les Sérines refers to an old local selection of Syrah, traditionally associated with the Northern Rhône.

The grapes are harvested by hand, carefully sorted and partially destemmed before fermentation in open vats for approximately three weeks.

Following malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels.

The nose reveals ripe blackberries, blackcurrants, white pepper and delicate spices.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with dense fruit, firm tannins and a refreshing mineral character reminiscent of graphite.

This 2021 vintage combines concentration with freshness.

Serve at 16–18°C with grilled beef, roast lamb, game or mushroom dishes.

Description

Saint-Joseph Les Sérines 2021 by Yves Cuilleron: Old-Vine Syrah from the Northern Rhône

A Distinguished Northern Rhône Estate

Saint-Joseph Les Sérines 2021 is produced by Yves Cuilleron, a respected winemaker based in Chavanay, in the Northern Rhône Valley.

The estate is known for its meticulous vineyard work and its approach to expressing the character of individual terroirs.

Les Sérines is an age-worthy red wine made exclusively from Syrah.

It represents a structured and complex expression of the Saint-Joseph appellation.

The Meaning of Les Sérines

The name Les Sérines refers to an old local selection of Syrah.

The grapes are sourced from old vines, with planting material traditionally preserved through massal selection.

These vines grow on shallow granite soils, characteristic of the steep Northern Rhône hillsides.

The terroir contributes to the wine's distinctive combination of depth, freshness and mineral character.

Careful Vineyard Management

Yves Cuilleron follows a sustainable approach to viticulture.

Vineyard work focuses on maintaining balanced growth, controlling yields and encouraging healthy grape development.

The estate uses limited treatments according to weather conditions and favours organic fertilisers.

However, the wine should not be presented as certified organic.

The grapes are harvested by hand to preserve their quality.

Traditional Winemaking

After harvesting, the grapes are sorted, crushed and partially destemmed.

Fermentation takes place in open vats for approximately three weeks, with temperature control.

Regular punching down and pumping over help extract colour, flavour and tannins.

Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barrels.

The wine is subsequently aged for 18 months in barrels, allowing its structure and aromatic complexity to develop.

The Character of the 2021 Vintage

The 2021 vintage displays an appealing balance between ripe fruit and freshness.

Its aromatic profile combines blackberries, blackcurrants and other dark fruits with white pepper and spice.

Subtle oak notes complement the fruit without dominating the bouquet.

Tasting Notes

On the palate, Les Sérines 2021 is full-bodied, concentrated and structured.

The tannins are firm in its youth, reflecting the wine's ageing potential.

A refreshing mineral character, often described as graphite-like, adds depth and definition.

The finish is persistent, with dark fruit and spicy nuances.

Cellaring Potential

Les Sérines is designed for long-term ageing.

The producer recommends allowing approximately four to five years after the vintage before opening the wine.

Under suitable storage conditions, it can develop over fifteen years or longer.

As it matures, the tannins soften and the aromatic profile gains complexity.

Food Pairings and Serving

Serve this Saint-Joseph red at 16–18°C.

It pairs particularly well with rib of beef, roast lamb, venison and rich mushroom dishes.

Pan-seared beef with porcini mushrooms is an especially suitable match.

If opened young, decanting may help reveal its aromatic complexity.
