Description
A Family-Owned Estate in Pomerol
Vieux Château Brun 2023 is an organic red Bordeaux wine produced by the Dubois-Lachaud family, owners of Château La Ganne.
Located in the southwestern part of Pomerol, close to Saint-Émilion, the estate benefits from a distinctive terroir on Bordeaux's Right Bank.
The family has maintained its winemaking traditions over several generations, combining traditional vineyard practices with organic viticulture.
An Exceptional Gravel and Iron-Rich Terroir
The Vieux Château Brun vineyard covers approximately four hectares.
Its soils consist of gravel with varying proportions of sand, resting on an iron-rich subsoil locally known as crasse de fer.
This geological feature is characteristic of certain Pomerol vineyards and contributes to the appellation's reputation for producing elegant, velvety red wines.
Certified Organic Viticulture
The estate has been certified organic since the 2019 vintage.
Traditional soil cultivation and extensive manual vineyard work are central to its approach.
Harvesting is carried out by hand, followed by grape sorting before vinification.
These practices are designed to preserve grape quality and reflect the vineyard's distinctive terroir.
Merlot and Cabernet Franc
The vineyard's traditional grape composition is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.
Merlot contributes generous dark fruit aromas, a rounded texture and supple tannins.
Cabernet Franc adds freshness and structural balance.
Together, these varieties create a classic expression of Pomerol.
Winemaking and Oak Ageing
The estate traditionally uses temperature-controlled maceration to manage extraction and preserve the fruit's aromatic qualities.
The wine is then aged in oak barrels for approximately twelve months, with only a limited proportion of new oak.
This approach allows the wine to develop complexity without overwhelming its natural fruit character.
Tasting Notes for the 2023 Vintage
The wine displays a deep red colour.
The nose reveals blackcurrant and coffee aromas, accompanied by dark fruit notes.
On the palate, the wine combines generous texture and firm tannins with refreshing acidity.
The result is a structured, balanced Pomerol with promising ageing potential.
Wine Enthusiast awarded the 2023 vintage 93 points, highlighting its freshness, generous tannins and blackcurrant flavours.
The publication recommends drinking from 2028.
Food Pairings and Serving Suggestions
Vieux Château Brun 2023 is an excellent companion to roast beef, duck breast, lamb and mushroom-based dishes.
It also pairs well with roasted poultry and mature cheeses.
Serve at approximately 16–18°C to appreciate its aromatic expression and tannic structure.
With suitable cellar conditions, the wine can develop additional complexity over the coming years.
