The E. Guigal Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red 2021 expresses all the richness of this prestigious appellation in the southern Rhône. Its blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% other traditional grape varieties lends it power, elegance and complexity. The Grenache brings a generous array of ripe red fruits, the Mourvèdre gives the wine structure with silky tannins, whilst the Syrah enhances the spicy notes and aromatic depth. A great wine for laying down, full-bodied and harmonious, ideal with red meats, game or mature cheeses.
Description
E. Guigal, founded in 1946 in Ampuis, is today one of the leading names in the Rhône Valley. With this 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red, it showcases the full richness of the terroirs, characterised by rounded pebbles, red clay and limestone soils, which are typical of the appellation. The vines, which are around fifty years old, produce concentrated grapes that give rise to a deep, generous and remarkably balanced wine. Traditional winemaking, combined with long maceration periods and three years’ ageing in oak casks, preserves the fruit’s finesse whilst developing a beautiful aromatic complexity.
The blend is based on 70 per cent Grenache, a grape variety that brings richness, roundness and aromas of jammy red fruits. Mourvèdre (15 per cent) reinforces the structure, tannins and notes of leather, spices and garrigue. Syrah (10 per cent) rounds the blend off with its nuances of black fruit, pepper and violet, whilst the other traditional grape varieties contribute finesse and balance.
The colour is a deep red with garnet highlights. The nose reveals aromas of black cherry, plum, blackberry, spices, liquorice, thyme and rosemary. On the palate, the attack is full-bodied, the tannins are velvety and the texture is generous. The long, lingering finish reveals notes of ripe fruit, cocoa, garrigue and sweet spices.
Served at between 16 and 18 °C, this fine wine will pair perfectly with a leg of lamb, a rib of beef, wild boar stew, roast pigeon or a platter of mature cheeses. It has ageing potential well in excess of fifteen years.
