E. Guigal’s La Mouline 2022 is one of Côte-Rôtie’s most iconic wines. Blended from 89% Syrah and 11% Viognier, it offers a unique style where the power of the Syrah meets the aromatic finesse of the Viognier. The Syrah brings notes of black fruit, spices and liquorice, whilst the Viognier reveals delicate aromas of violet, white flowers and apricot. Rich, silky and intensely aromatic, this great wine is the perfect accompaniment to the finest gourmet cuisine and has remarkable ageing potential.
Description
E. Guigal, founded in 1946 in Ampuis, is renowned worldwide for its exceptional single-vineyard wines. La Mouline forms part of the famous ‘La La La’ trio, alongside La Landonne and La Turque. Produced in very limited quantities, this cuvée comes exclusively from a historic plot on the Côte Blonde, where the terraced vines, around 100 years old, thrive on soils of gneiss and calcareous loess. After a long maceration of around five weeks, the wine is aged for 40 months in new oak barrels, developing unrivalled complexity and elegance.
The blend of 89 per cent Syrah and 11 per cent Viognier is the true hallmark of this cuvée. The Syrah brings concentration, depth, dark fruit, spices and tannic structure, whilst the Viognier – vinified alongside the Syrah in the traditional Côte-Rôtie style – adds finesse, a silky texture and a floral bouquet of great elegance.
The colour is a deep ruby with vermilion highlights. The nose reveals remarkable complexity with aromas of raspberry, blackberry, blackcurrant, violet, peony, liquorice, black pepper, cocoa and subtle toasty notes. On the palate, the attack is incredibly smooth. The texture is velvety, almost silky, underpinned by exceptional concentration and exceptionally refined tannins. The finish is endless, blending black fruits, flowers, spices and a delicate minerality.
Served at between 16 and 18 °C, this great Côte-Rôtie will perfectly complement a Rossini-style fillet of beef, roast pigeon, pheasant, saddle of lamb, hare à la royale or mature cheeses. Its ageing potential easily exceeds 20 to 30 years.
