GLENMORANGIE 12 Years Old Highlands Single Malt Scotch Whiskey
Description
The Glenmorangie distillery is a UK institution.
Of the 10 million bottles produced, around 6 million are sold in the UK.
It can be said that this is the British single malt of choice. Glenmorangie, a distillery in the Eastern Highlands, began distilling in 1843. The first two stills, purchased second-hand, were intended for gin production. With their 8-metre height and 3-metre neck, Glenmorangie claims to have the tallest stills in Scotland, a claim refuted by Bruichladdich.
The difference is only a few centimetres.
The height of these stills allows for the production of a smooth, light single malt. The mineral-rich water from the Tarlogie spring is the second element that gives Glenmorangie its unique character. During the 1990s, the distillery acquired around 600 acres of land around the distillery to control the quality of the water it draws. Glenmorangie has been owned by LVMH and Diageo since 2004, and the shareholders' policy of moving upmarket means that 100% of production is sold in Glenmorangie bottles. The production of the fabulous BNJ (Baillie Nicol & Jarvie) blend is therefore no longer possible. Human intervention is crucial in the process of making a bottle of Glenmorangie, with distillation being carried out by the "Sixteen Men of Tain".
Maturation is then entrusted to the team led by Mr Lumsden, who is behind the programme of ageing in different "Extra Matured" casks, such as Port, Sherry, Sauternes and red wine casks.
This programme is so central to Glenmorangie's development and differentiation strategy that the distillery now owns its own oak forest in Missouri.
The barrels produced in the USA are dried for two years before being leased to Heaven Hill or Jack Daniel's, then cross the Atlantic and are filled with Glenmorangie.
GLENMORANGIE 12 Year Old The Original 70 cl is a whisky from the Highlands, a region renowned both for its whiskies, with the largest area of Scotch whisky production, and for its Highland Games and famous Loch Ness. In the Highlands, a region in northern Scotland, you will find an astonishing diversity of whiskies, as 30 distilleries coexist under the same regional appellation, with styles as different as the whiskies of the islands, with the exception of Islay (Jura, Skye, etc.), whiskies from the fertile plains of the west, whiskies from mountainous areas such as Ben Nevis, and whiskies from the north such as Old Pulteney and Glenmorangie. This is why the Highlands region has been subdivided into four production regions: Eastern Highlands, Central Highlands, Western Highlands and Northern Highlands.
This whisky is a Single Malt. To be a Single Malt, a whisky must comply with two essential rules. The whisky must be produced in a single distillery, which produces the Single, and must be made only from malted cereals: the Malt. The malted cereal must be barley, but in exceptional circumstances it is possible to use rye. Scotland is the largest producer of single malt. These are known as Scotch Single Malt Whiskies, but other countries, such as Japan, India, the Czech Republic and France, also distil Single Malts. The conditions are always the same: the whisky must come from a single distillery and the grain used must be malted barley.
This GLENMORANGIE 12 Year Old Original 70 cl has floral notes that evoke hints of fresh flowers such as heather, violet, orange blossom, rose and lavender. These notes are very subtle, and the quality and number of distillations directly influence the perception of these very fine aromas. Notes of fragrances such as incense are also perceptible, carried by the oilier, heavier elements of this GLENMORANGIE 12 Year Old Original 70 cl.
This GLENMORANGIE 12 Year Old Original 70 cl is fruity, evoking a sense of lightness in its aromas and flavour on the palate. The yeasts used play an essential role in the final result and, generally speaking, when a whisky is neither peaty, smoky nor iodised, fruit aromas appear. The main fruit families are white-fleshed fruits such as peaches, pears and apples, red fruits, citrus fruits, but also dried fruits such as walnuts and fresh hazelnuts.
