Description
The Caol Ila 13 Year Old, bottled by Gordon & MacPhail, is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky from the island of Islay in Scotland. This iconic region is world-renowned for its whiskies characterised by peat, smoke and maritime influences. With this 13-year-old expression, Gordon & MacPhail offers an accessible and balanced interpretation of the Caol Ila style as part of its Discovery range. Bottled at 43% ABV and presented in a 70 cl bottle, this whisky has been matured in bourbon casks.
Gordon & MacPhail’s Discovery range has been designed to highlight the key flavour profiles of Scotch whisky. This Caol Ila falls into the ‘Smoky’ category, with a distinct peatiness that is perfectly complemented by a fruity and indulgent character. On the nose, the peaty smoke blends with notes of dried meat, apricot jam and vanilla. As it breathes, fresher and fruitier nuances also emerge.
On the palate, the Caol Ila 13 Year Old reveals a lovely balance between smoke, malt and exotic fruits. Pineapple, kiwi and banana lend a fruity and slightly sweet flavour, whilst citrus fruits, particularly lemon zest, add a touch of freshness. The peat remains present without overpowering the overall flavour. The finish is long and warm, with a gentle smokiness reminiscent of the embers of a wood fire and a delicate sweetness.
This Islay whisky is therefore an excellent introduction to peated single malts. It can be enjoyed neat, at room temperature, or with a few drops of water to gradually release its aromas. It pairs well with smoked salmon, grilled or smoked fish, seafood, certain mature cheeses, or simply as part of a tasting session amongst Scotch whisky enthusiasts.
