Volnay Le Village Domaine Berthelemot: a 100% Pinot Noir organic red Burgundy

Domaine Berthelemot’s Volnay Le Village perfectly embodies the style sought by this family-run estate in Meursault. The estate cultivates around 15 hectares in the Côte de Beaune and produces wines using methods that respect the vines and the environment. Its wines have been certified organic since 2021.

This cuvée comes from a plot known as ‘Le Village’, situated in a small enclosed vineyard overlooking the houses of Volnay and offering unobstructed views of the village and the valley. The vines are planted on a slope of around 10 per cent, facing east to south-east. The soil is a mixture of clay and silt with a high proportion of active limestone. This terroir helps to give the Pinot Noir a character that is at once refined, fresh and elegant.

The wine is made exclusively from Pinot Noir, the emblematic grape variety of Burgundy’s great red wines. The grapes are harvested by hand before being aged in oak barrels. This method allows the wine to develop fully without masking its fruity character. On the nose, the bouquet opens with refined aromas of red and dark berries, complemented by a delicate hint of violet. The palate echoes this fruity character with greater depth, revealing a velvety texture and a delicate, lingering finish.

This organic Volnay is a superb wine for fine dining. Its finesse and silky texture pair beautifully with roast or grilled poultry, tender red meat, veal fillet or a slow-cooked dish such as bœuf bourguignon. It also pairs very well with mushrooms and mature cheeses such as Époisses, Comté or farmhouse Brie. It is best served at between 15 and 16 °C; a brief aeration may be beneficial to fully release its aromas.
