Description
The Andresen Vintage 2011 Port is a characterful wine that exemplifies the richness of Portugal’s great fortified wines. Produced by J. H. Andresen, founded in 1845, this vintage Port is made from a single harvest and has excellent ageing potential. The 2011 vintage is particularly renowned in the Douro Valley for its concentrated fruit and the quality of its tannins. This 75 cl bottle is ideal for lovers of powerful, complex wines capable of ageing well.
The spectacular terroir of the Douro
Situated in northern Portugal, the Douro Valley is characterised by its steep slopes, terraced vineyards and predominantly schist soils. Hot summers encourage the grapes to ripen fully, whilst the unique characteristics of each plot contribute to the complexity of the blends. Traditional grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Cão contribute to the identity of this Port, bringing depth, intense fruitiness and tannic structure.
The production of a Vintage Port
Port is produced through fortification: the addition of grape brandy during fermentation preserves some of the natural sugars whilst increasing the alcohol content. A Vintage Port is then aged for a relatively short time in casks before being bottled, where it continues to develop for many years. Unlike Tawny Port, it thus retains an intense fruity character and a structure suited to ageing.
A rich and persistent tasting experience
Its very dark ruby colour, with purplish highlights, suggests fine concentration. The nose reveals aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and red and black berries, complemented by spicy and mineral notes. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and voluptuous, supported by firm yet balanced tannins. The finish lingers at length on notes of black fruit and spices.
Food pairings and serving
Serve this Vintage Port at between 16 and 18 °C, after decanting carefully to separate any natural sediment that may have formed over time. It pairs beautifully with a dark chocolate fondant, a blackberry dessert or a blue-veined cheese such as Stilton or Roquefort.
The Andresen Vintage Port 2011 is a prestigious choice for connoisseurs of fine vintage Ports, to be enjoyed now after aeration or cellared to discover its full future complexity.
