Baron Nathaniel 2021: a characterful Pauillac from Baron Philippe de Rothschild

Baron Nathaniel 2021 is a red wine from the Pauillac appellation, in the heart of the Médoc, produced by Baron Philippe de Rothschild. This cuvée pays tribute to Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, who acquired the estate – then known as Brane-Mouton – in 1853; it later became Château Mouton Rothschild. It follows in the tradition of great Bordeaux blends, with Cabernet Sauvignon playing a prominent role, complemented in particular by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Petit Verdot may also be included in the blend, according to the available specifications.

On tasting, the wine displays an intense garnet colour. The nose opens with aromas of blackcurrant and dark fruits, accompanied by spicy and toasty notes. With aeration, more indulgent nuances may emerge, evoking vanilla, mocha or cocoa. On the palate, it is characterised by a full-bodied texture and a structured tannic framework, underpinned by a freshness that complements the aromatic persistence. The 2021 vintage thus offers a less sun-drenched expression than some recent vintages, with a profile in which freshness and structure play a prominent role.

To enjoy this Pauillac to the full, serve it at between 16 and 18 °C. Opening the bottle in advance or decanting it can help bring out its character, particularly whilst it is still young. At the table, it pairs well with a roast rack of lamb, a rib of beef, a game stew or mushrooms such as porcini. It can also be served with mature cheeses.
