Château La Commanderie 2021 is a red Bordeaux wine produced in the prestigious Saint-Estèphe appellation, located in the northern Médoc. This historic Cru Bourgeois estate benefits from well-drained gravel soils and an exceptional vineyard location close to some of the region's most renowned châteaux.
The estate's traditional grape composition consists of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, combining ripe fruit expression, elegant texture and tannic structure.
Following traditional winemaking methods, the wine is aged for approximately 12 months in oak barrels, including 30% new oak.
The 2021 vintage offers aromas of red berries, blackcurrants, liquorice and delicate toasted notes. On the palate, it displays freshness, structured tannins and a balanced finish.
This Saint-Estèphe red wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, grilled beef, game dishes and mature cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C to appreciate its aromatic complexity and distinctive Médoc character.
Description
Château La Commanderie 2021 is a traditional red Bordeaux wine from the Saint-Estèphe appellation, one of the most prestigious wine-producing areas on the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary.
Recognised as a Cru Bourgeois, Château La Commanderie combines centuries of history with the distinctive characteristics of the Médoc's gravel-rich vineyards.
A historic Bordeaux wine estate
The property's origins date back to the period of the Knights Templar. Its name was officially authorised during the reign of Napoleon III.
Gabriel Meffre acquired the estate in 1957, and his son Claude subsequently continued the family's involvement in its development.
The vineyards occupy carefully selected sites in Saint-Estèphe, including elevated gravel terraces overlooking the Gironde estuary.
Grape varieties and winemaking
The estate's traditional vineyard composition includes 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Merlot contributes generous fruit flavours, roundness and supple texture, while Cabernet Sauvignon provides tannic structure, freshness and ageing potential.
The vines grow on gravel and rounded stones over sandy, clay-limestone subsoils.
Traditional Bordeaux vinification is followed by approximately 12 months of maturation in oak barrels, with around 30% new oak.
Tasting notes and food pairings
Château La Commanderie 2021 displays an attractive ruby colour.
The aromatic profile combines red berries, blackcurrants, liquorice, subtle spices and delicate oak influences.
On the palate, the wine offers a fruity opening, well-defined tannins and a fresh, balanced finish. Its structure reflects the characteristics of the 2021 Bordeaux vintage.
This red wine is an excellent partner for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, mushroom dishes and aged cheeses.
Serve at 16–18°C. The wine can be enjoyed after aeration or cellared for further development, depending on storage conditions.
Château La Commanderie 2021 represents an appealing introduction to the classic wines of Saint-Estèphe, combining Médoc heritage, expressive fruit and traditional Bordeaux craftsmanship.
