It will also age well in the cellar.
Description
Château Phélan Ségur 2023 is an iconic wine from the Saint-Estèphe appellation, in the north of the Médoc. This historic estate, founded in the early 19th century by the Irishman Bernard Phélan, has built a solid reputation thanks to wines that combine depth, balance and elegance. Now owned by Philippe Van de Vyvere, the estate benefits from a terroir of clay-gravel soils and its proximity to the Gironde estuary, which helps to moderate climatic variations.
The 2023 vintage is a blend of 60 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, 38 per cent Merlot and 2 per cent Petit Verdot. The Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of the wine, providing structure, freshness and ageing potential. The Merlot brings a generous fruitiness and a softer texture, whilst the Petit Verdot rounds the wine off with a touch of complexity.
The nose reveals an expressive bouquet of blackcurrant, cherry and dark fruits, accompanied by floral notes, cedar and spices. On the palate, the wine captivates with its juicy fruit, vitality and refined tannins. The body is well-structured without being excessive, with a silky texture that gains in depth with aeration. The long, precise finish reveals a remarkable balance between freshness and depth.
Ageing in French oak barrels, with up to 50 per cent new oak depending on the vintage, supports the wine’s development and contributes to its harmony.
At the table, Château Phélan Ségur 2023 pairs well with a grilled rib of beef, a roast rack of lamb, duck breast or a game dish. Serve it at around 16 to 18 °C, after allowing it to breathe properly. Its structure also allows it to age in the cellar and gradually develop more complex aromas.
This Saint-Estèphe will appeal to lovers of great Bordeaux wines who are looking for a wine with character, precision and elegance.
