The Château Malartic-Lagravière Red 2022 is a Graves Grand Cru Classé that exemplifies the refinement of the great wines of Pessac-Léognan. Its blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc reveals aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar and smoke. On the palate, it is full-bodied and well-structured, combining a dense texture with velvety tannins and lovely freshness. Its lingering finish is the perfect accompaniment to a rib of beef, fillet of beef with mushrooms or a leg of lamb. A great Bordeaux to enjoy now or to lay down in the cellar.
Description
The Château Malartic-Lagravière Red 2022 is a must-have for lovers of fine Bordeaux red wines. Situated in Léognan, at the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, this estate holds the Grand Cru Classé de Graves classification for both its red and white wines. Owned by the Bonnie family since 1997, the château is renowned for its complex, balanced and elegant wines, which precisely express the character of their terroir.
The 2022 vintage is a blend of 53 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, 43 per cent Merlot, 2.5 per cent Petit Verdot and 1.5 per cent Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Sauvignon brings depth and structure, whilst the Merlot lends the wine its generous body and fruitiness. The other two grape varieties round the blend off with aromatic nuances and added complexity.
The vineyard’s Günz gravel, combined with a limestone subsoil and veins of clay, contributes to the identity of this cuvée. Following a hand-harvest and rigorous sorting of the grapes, plot-by-plot vinification ensures the distinct character of each batch is preserved. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 60 per cent of which are new.
On the nose, the bouquet combines blackcurrant and blackberry with notes of cedar, spice and smokiness. On the palate, it is dense and full-bodied, with velvety tannins that provide structure without compromising its elegance. The freshness underpins the balance and prolongs the finish.
Serve this red Pessac-Léognan at between 16 and 18 °C. It pairs well with a rib of beef, fillet of beef with truffles, a rack of lamb or game in sauce. Its concentration and structure also make it a wine worth keeping in the cellar to watch as it matures.
