Château d’Anglès Classique Red 2021: a Languedoc wine blending fruit and spice

The Château d’Anglès Classique Red 2021 is a fine expression of the red wines of La Clape, an appellation situated on the Languedoc coast, near Narbonne. This cuvée showcases the character of a Mediterranean terroir where sunshine, limestone soils and the influence of the sea contribute to the balance of the grapes. The result is a generous, fruity and well-structured red wine, designed to accompany convivial dining.

La Clape, a unique terroir in the Languedoc

Formerly an island massif that has since become a peninsula, La Clape benefits from an environment strongly shaped by the Mediterranean. The soils consist mainly of limestone scree and pebbles, whilst sea breezes temper the intense summer heat. The cooler nights encourage the grapes to ripen gradually and help to preserve a pleasant freshness in the red wines.

The Château d’Anglès estate was taken over and developed by Éric Fabre and his wife Christine from 2001 onwards. Drawing on the experience he gained, notably at Château Lafite Rothschild, Éric Fabre is committed to showcasing the traditional grape varieties of the Languedoc through balanced wines that remain true to their origins.

A complementary Mediterranean blend

The Classique Rouge 2021 is a blend of 40 per cent Syrah, 40 per cent Grenache and 20 per cent Mourvèdre. The Syrah brings aromas of dark fruit and spices, the Grenache contributes to the wine’s roundness and richness, whilst the Mourvèdre enhances its structure and depth.

The grapes are harvested according to their ripeness, sorted and then destemmed. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by a long maceration of around 30 days designed to gradually extract the aromatic and tannic compounds. An 18-month ageing period in vats then helps the wine to harmonise whilst preserving the expression of the fruit.

A supple and expressive tasting experience

Its deep red colour with dark highlights heralds a wine of character. The nose reveals aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and ripe red berries, complemented by hints of pepper and liquorice. On the palate, the texture is supple and generous, supported by fine, silky tannins. The freshness balances the rich fruitiness and provides a pleasant, lingering finish.

Food and wine pairings

Serve this red at around 16 °C. It pairs perfectly with a grilled entrecôte, a herb-crusted leg of lamb, a Provençal stew or a selection of fine charcuterie. Hard cheeses also make an excellent pairing.
