Description
BOON OUDE Gueuze à l’Ancienne is a traditional Belgian beer that showcases the distinctive character of lambic and the expertise of Brouwerij Boon. Produced in Lembeek, Belgium, this gueuze has been part of the brewery’s range since 1975. Its identity comes from a careful blend of lambic beers matured for different lengths of time in oak barrels, followed by a slow secondary fermentation in the bottle. The result is a lively, complex beer with refreshing acidity, a rounded texture and a long, dry finish.
Lambic is known for its spontaneous fermentation, a process in which naturally occurring yeasts and microorganisms contribute to the beer’s development. After brewing, the lambic matures in oak barrels, where it gradually develops layers of flavour. For Oude Gueuze à l’Ancienne, Boon blends lambics aged for one, two and three years. Each component contributes to the final balance, bringing together freshness, maturity and aromatic depth.
Once the blend is prepared, it is bottled and allowed to undergo secondary fermentation over several months. This traditional bottle conditioning creates natural carbonation and helps develop the beer’s complex character. Boon’s Oude Gueuze is unsweetened and unfiltered, preserving its traditional profile. The protected European designation “Gueuze à l’Ancienne” distinguishes this authentic style and its established production method.
The aroma is fresh and fruit-forward, with citrus notes, particularly grapefruit, alongside hints of apricot. Oak ageing adds another dimension, bringing woody nuances that are complemented by touches of vanilla and nuts. On the palate, the beer combines gentle tartness with a soft, rounded texture. Rather than relying on sweetness, it offers a balanced interplay between fruit, acidity and mature barrel character.
The finish is long, dry and intense, leaving a refreshing impression. At 7% ABV, BOON OUDE Gueuze à l’Ancienne has enough structure to reward slow, attentive tasting. Its layered profile makes it a compelling option for drinkers who enjoy sour beers, traditional Belgian brewing and distinctive fermentation methods.
For the best tasting experience, serve this gueuze at around 12°C in a traditional gueuze glass or a suitable tasting glass. This temperature allows its freshness and aromatic complexity to come through without losing the subtler oak and fruit notes. The 75 cl bottle is well suited to sharing with friends or serving alongside a meal.
For food pairing inspiration, try it with mature cheeses, savoury charcuterie or richer dishes where a touch of acidity can provide contrast. It may also work well with roasted vegetables and other savoury preparations, depending on their seasoning and texture. These are suggested pairings rather than fixed rules; the beer’s balance of citrus, tartness and dry finish offers room for experimentation.
BOON OUDE Gueuze à l’Ancienne is a distinctive choice for anyone interested in the heritage of Belgian lambic beers. Its blend of differently aged lambics, oak maturation and bottle refermentation give it a character that differs from many conventional ales and lagers. Unsweetened, unfiltered and complex, it combines a refreshing profile with an expressive finish. Whether enjoyed as an aperitif or as part of a tasting with food, this 75 cl bottle offers an opportunity to explore the craftsmanship and tradition behind one of Belgium’s best-known beer styles.
