Hailing from Denmark, Aalborg Nordguld is an original aquavit with an alcohol content of 40% vol. Launched in 2007, it stands out for its use of an aromatic distillate derived from amber, nicknamed ‘the gold of the North’. Combined with caraway and dill, then matured in sherry casks, this blend reveals a rounded and complex profile. The nose evokes caraway and vanilla, whilst the palate develops herbaceous, resinous and spicy notes. Best enjoyed chilled, particularly with smoked salmon.

Aalborg Nordguld: an aquavit with character, blending tradition and originality
Aalborg Nordguld is an aquavit produced in Denmark by Aalborg. Launched in 2007, this cuvée stands out for its unusual aromatic profile within the world of Scandinavian spirits: it incorporates aromatic compounds derived from amber, the fossilised resin also known as ‘the gold of the North’. This distinctive feature is the origin of the name Nordguld.
The recipe combines this amber distillate with distillates of caraway and dill seeds, two iconic ingredients in aquavit. Maturation in sherry casks rounds off the blend and contributes to its rounded texture and harmonious finish. This method produces a spirit at 40% ABV that combines the traditional characteristics of aquavit with a distinctive aromatic profile.
On tasting, caraway comes through first, accompanied by a subtle hint of vanilla. The amber notes then add a deeper dimension, with nuances reminiscent of rosemary, pine needles and resin. The overall impression is rounded, aromatic and spicy, whilst retaining the characteristic herbal freshness of aquavits.
Aalborg Nordguld is best enjoyed chilled, either on its own or as an accompaniment to a meal. It pairs particularly well with salted or smoked fish, notably smoked salmon, but also with Nordic dishes and dishes with bold flavours. Its distinctive profile also makes it ideal for enjoying as an after-dinner drink.
