Gulden Draak Madeira Cuvée Prestige 75 cl: a Belgian beer for ageing with deep aromas

The Van Steenberge Brewery, founded in 1784, is renowned worldwide for its characterful beers and barrel-aged vintages. The Gulden Draak Madeira Cuvée Prestige perfectly exemplifies this expertise. After brewing the famous Gulden Draak Classic, the beer is transferred to casks that previously contained Madeira wine, where it is left to mature for thirty weeks. This lengthy ageing process allows the interaction between the wood and the beer to develop exceptional aromatic richness whilst preserving the powerful and generous character of the original recipe.

The deep mahogany colour with ruby highlights is topped with a creamy beige head. The nose reveals aromas of raisins, figs, dates, prunes, brown caramel and rock sugar. As it breathes, notes of vanilla, nuts, cocoa, gingerbread and toasted oak emerge. On the palate, the attack is round and generous. Flavours of roasted malt, candied fruit, honey, mild coffee and Madeira wine blend perfectly with a subtle woody touch. The finish is long, elegant and lingering, revealing notes of dried fruit, vanilla and spices.

Served at between 12 and 14 °C, this beer is the ideal accompaniment to foie gras, game, mature cheeses, a dark chocolate dessert or a dried-fruit tart. It also makes for a remarkable beer to savour at leisure.
