The Ardbeg Traigh Bhan 19 Year Old Batch 4 is a characterful Scottish single malt, crafted on the island of Islay and produced in small batches. Its name refers to Traigh Bhan beach, nicknamed ‘Singing Sands’, where the sand seems to sing beneath your feet. This fourth release, bottled in 2022, blends whiskies matured in American oak casks and Oloroso sherry casks. The nose reveals notes of pine, fennel and lemon, accompanied by a delicate smokiness. On the palate, dark chocolate, coffee, spices and peat combine to create a rich and balanced tasting experience. The long, lingering finish reveals hints of vanilla, cloves and sea smoke. Bottled at 46.2% ABV, this 19-year-old whisky will appeal to lovers of great peated malts.
Description
Traigh Bhan beach, on the coast of Islay, is the inspiration behind this collection of 19-year-old Ardbeg single malts. Known as the ‘Singing Sands’, it evokes the wild, coastal landscapes of this Scottish island, renowned for its peaty whiskies. Batch 4, bottled in 2022, exemplifies the balance sought by the distillery between smokiness, herbal freshness, malty sweetness and the complexity derived from maturation.
This release combines American oak casks with Oloroso sherry casks, with a higher proportion of the latter than in previous versions. The wood and sherry enrich the whisky’s character without overshadowing its peaty signature. On the nose, pine and fennel are accompanied by lemon, mint and medicinal notes. Upon aeration, hints of hazelnut, vanilla and mentholated chocolate may emerge.
The palate is generous, with intense woody smoke, dark chocolate and ground coffee. Lemon cream brings a tangy freshness, whilst notes of peanut butter, soft caramel and dried fruit add roundness. Hints of lemongrass, aniseed, cloves and white pepper linger on the palate. The long, warm finish combines peat with cocoa, vanilla and spices.
Bottled at 46.2% ABV without chill filtration, this single malt deserves careful tasting, either neat or with a few drops of water. It pairs beautifully with intense dark chocolate or a mature cheese. This bottle is aimed at Ardbeg enthusiasts seeking an aged, complex whisky deeply rooted in the Islay style.
