The Ledaig 12 Year Old Discovery Smoky will appeal to lovers of single malts with a distinctive character. On the nose, the peaty smoke gives way to notes of smoked meat with maple syrup, toffee and baked apple, before revealing hints of seaweed and a delicate touch of saltiness. On the palate, stewed fruit, raisins and redcurrants blend with milk chocolate and crème brûlée. Caramel adds a touch of indulgence, whilst citrus and embers prolong the smoky character. The finish, woody and lingering, gradually evolves into delicate citrus notes.
Description
Gordon & MacPhail’s Ledaig 12 Year Old is a particularly interesting bottle for discovering the peaty style of the Isle of Mull. Distilled in Tobermory, the Ledaig has a distinct character compared to the distillery’s sweeter, floral single malts. Gordon & MacPhail describes this expression as featuring notes of smoke, grilled or smoked meat, pepper and a hint of vanilla.
In this Discovery edition, the whisky is presented in an accessible style whilst retaining genuine aromatic intensity. The nose opens with a lovely peaty smokiness before revealing hints of smoked meat, butterscotch and baked apple. The presence of seaweed and a subtle salty note reinforces its island character.
On the palate, the Ledaig 12 Year Old becomes more indulgent. Stewed fruit, raisins and redcurrants are combined with milk chocolate and crème brûlée. Caramel lends a smooth sensation, whilst citrus and notes of embers prolong the smoky character. The finish retains a woody presence before gradually evolving towards citrus notes.
At 43% ABV, this Single Malt offers a good balance between aromatic intensity and approachability. It is an excellent choice for whisky enthusiasts seeking a peaty, smoky, salty and rich profile.
It is best enjoyed neat in a whisky glass, though a few drops of water can help soften the peat and bring out the fruity notes. For an original pairing, it goes well with dark chocolate, smoked salmon, smoked meat or certain blue-veined cheeses.
