The Hearach Single Malt: Whisky from the Isle of Harris
The Hearach is the first historic single malt whisky from the Isle of Harris Distillery, located in Tarbert in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. Its name refers to the people of Harris and reflects the close relationship between the whisky, its island home and the local team behind its production. Distilled, matured, married and bottled on the island, The Hearach is a whisky shaped by its surroundings and by the people who make it.
The recipe combines malt whisky matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks with whisky aged in Oloroso and Fino sherry casks. The different components are blended in batches and left to marry for at least twelve weeks, helping the flavours come together. The whisky is lightly peated, with a stated phenol level of 12–15 ppm.
The tasting profile balances gentle peat smoke with toasted malt and homemade apple-sauce notes. Wildflowers, including white clover, add a floral dimension, while mixed spices, candied ginger, vanilla and honeycomb bring warmth and sweetness. The finish is long, with creamy notes and a lasting hint of leather.
Bottled at 46% ABV in a 70 cl format, The Hearach is non-chill filtered and contains no artificial colouring. It can be enjoyed neat to appreciate its full structure or with a small drop of water to explore its aromas.
This single malt is particularly suited to whisky enthusiasts looking for an island expression that combines restrained smoke, fruit, malt and spice without allowing peat to dominate the tasting experience.
Description
Isle of Harris The Hearach: An Island Single Malt with Character
The Hearach represents a significant milestone for the Isle of Harris Distillery in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. Produced in Tarbert, it is the distillery’s first historic single malt and is made entirely on the island, from distillation through maturation and bottling. The name The Hearach celebrates the island’s people and their role in creating a whisky closely connected to its place of origin.
The spirit is made from Scottish malted barley, including the Concerto and Laureate varieties, and uses water sourced from Abhainn Cnoc a’ Charrain near Tarbert. Following fermentation and distillation, the whisky matures in a selection of first-fill ex-bourbon casks and Oloroso and Fino sherry butts. The different cask types contribute distinct characteristics, from vanilla and sweetness to additional aromatic depth.
The whisky is assembled in batches and allowed to marry for a minimum of twelve weeks. Its lightly peated character, measured at 12–15 ppm, provides a gentle smoky note rather than an overpowering peat influence.
On the nose and palate, toasted malt and soft peat smoke combine with apple-sauce flavours and floral notes reminiscent of white clover. Mixed spices, candied ginger, vanilla and honeycomb create a warm, rounded character. The finish is long and creamy, with a subtle leather note.
The Hearach is bottled at 46% ABV in a 70 cl bottle. It is non-chill filtered and has no artificial colouring. Enjoy it neat or with a small amount of water, depending on your preference.
For those exploring Scotch whisky beyond the better-known regions, The Hearach offers a distinctive Outer Hebridean expression in which local identity, carefully selected casks and gentle peat smoke come together in a balanced single malt.
