The Saint-Émilion terroir at the heart of Château Grand Rivallon

Situated between Saint-Émilion and Libourne, Château Grand Rivallon benefits from a terroir characteristic of Bordeaux’s right bank. The estate covers 10.7 hectares, of which 10.5 hectares are under vine, planted on limestone plateaus containing asterias and on slopes composed of red sandy-clay formations. These soils help to give the wine depth, freshness and an interesting mineral character. The vineyards are managed using sustainable viticulture practices.

The estate belongs to the Rivière family, who have been involved in the wine industry since 1875. To support the work in the vineyard and the winemaking process, the family calls upon Stéphane Derenoncourt, a renowned consultant on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. This pursuit of precision helps to preserve the terroir’s identity whilst seeking balance and elegance in the wine.

The 2023 vintage is made from 85 per cent Merlot, 10 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and 5 per cent Cabernet Franc. Merlot forms the heart of the blend with its generous fruit, suppleness and velvety texture. The Cabernet Sauvignon adds more structure, whilst the Cabernet Franc rounds the blend off with its aromatic notes and freshness.

Following vinification, Château Grand Rivallon 2023 is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, 40 per cent of which are new. This ageing helps to develop notes of vanilla, spices and subtle oak without masking the wine’s fruity character.

On tasting, the 2023 vintage displays a beautiful, deep ruby colour. The bouquet combines red and black fruits with subtle woody and vanilla notes. On the palate, it is inviting, fruity and well-balanced, with supple, well-integrated tannins. Château Grand Rivallon 2023 was awarded 90/100 at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge, having been tasted in 2025.
