Green Spot Léoville Barton: where Irish whisky meets a fine Bordeaux wine

With Green Spot Château Léoville Barton, Mitchell & Son has created a particularly distinctive expression of its famous Irish whiskey. This 46° Single Pot Still blend combines the fruity and spicy character of Irish whiskey with the refined influence of casks that previously held a fine red wine from Saint-Julien. The choice of Château Léoville Barton also has a historical dimension: the Barton family is of Irish origin, thus creating a genuine link between Ireland and the Médoc region of Bordeaux.

The whisky is initially matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, before undergoing a 12- to 24-month finish in French oak barrels sourced from Château Léoville Barton. This additional maturation considerably enriches its aromatic profile without obscuring the character of the Irish Single Pot Still.

The tasting begins with an elegant and complex nose. Notes of oak and undergrowth blend with gentle spices, followed by aromas of flowers and red fruits such as strawberry and raspberry. Orchard fruits lend a freshness characteristic of Green Spot. On the palate, the whisky reveals a lovely balance between vanilla, barley, ripe fruit, spices and French oak. Notes of apple, red berries and yellow-fleshed fruit may also emerge as the tasting progresses.

The finish is long, elegant and warm. The oaky notes gradually give way to the spices of the whisky and wine, with hints of clove, vanilla and nutmeg.

At 46% ABV, Green Spot Château Léoville Barton offers lovely intensity whilst retaining great finesse. It can be enjoyed neat or on the rocks and makes an excellent gift for lovers of Irish whisky, Single Pot Still and spirits matured in fine wine casks.
