Rozelieures Subtil Collection 70 cl: a well-rounded French whisky

The Rozelieures Subtil Collection holds a special place in the Lorraine-based distillery’s range. It is the first unpeated single malt produced by Rozelieures, a expression designed to be smooth, indulgent and aromatically refined. Unlike peated whiskies, it does not seek out smoky or medicinal notes: its character is based more on fruit, flowers, malted grains and vanilla notes.

Produced in Rozelieures, in Meurthe-et-Moselle, this whisky embodies the ‘Single Estate’ concept championed by Maison Grallet-Dupic. The distillery oversees all the key stages of production on site, from growing the barley to bottling. The family grows some of the barley used in whisky production themselves and also has its own malting plant in the Vosges.

The Subtil Collection undergoes double distillation in Charente stills, followed by maturation in a variety of casks. Former Bourbon casks in particular contribute to its vanilla-like and rounded character, whilst Cognac casks add to its elegant, fruity complexity. French oak rounds off this maturation process and contributes to the whisky’s structure.

On tasting, the nose is rich and indulgent, with notes of floral honey, pear, white grapes and quince jam. The palate is particularly rich and enveloping, dominated by vanilla before giving way to ripe fruit with almost candied accents. The finish, of medium length, remains smooth and indulgent with notes of mellowed grains and gentle spices.

At 40% ABV, the Rozelieures Subtil Collection can be enjoyed neat, perhaps with a few drops of water to further open up its aromas. Its smooth, unpeated profile makes it particularly accessible to whisky enthusiasts wishing to discover French whisky or who appreciate rounded, fruity expressions with little smokiness.
