Wambrechies Genever is a traditional French grain spirit produced by the historic Claeyssens distillery in Wambrechies, near Lille, in northern France.
Founded in 1817, the distillery has preserved a regional tradition closely associated with the industrial heritage of the Hauts-de-France.
This genever is made from rye and malted barley. The grains are milled and cooked before undergoing a 48-hour fermentation using fresh yeast.
The fermented liquid is then double-distilled in copper stills. Juniper berries are introduced during the second distillation, contributing the characteristic botanical and spicy notes.
The resulting spirit displays pronounced malt aromas and a relatively dry palate, followed by a persistent, harmonious, spicy finish.
Presented in a traditional 70 cl stoneware jug, it recalls the historical packaging of northern French spirits.
Wambrechies Genever can be enjoyed chilled, neat or as a digestif. It is also suitable for cocktails that benefit from its distinctive grain character.
The producer currently lists this stoneware edition at 38% ABV, although some retailer listings still indicate 35%.
Description
Wambrechies Genever is a traditional grain-based spirit with roots in the industrial and cultural history of northern France.
Produced by the historic Claeyssens distillery, it belongs to the genever family, a category of spirits closely associated with northern France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Unlike many modern gins, traditional genever retains a noticeable grain character, derived from the cereals used in fermentation and distillation.
The history of the Wambrechies distillery began in 1817, when Joseph Claeyssens converted a family-owned oil mill into a genever distillery.
Its location beside the Deûle canal provided access to grain transportation, water and existing milling equipment. These advantages supported the development of the business during the nineteenth century.
An engineer named Henri Lenssen helped design the original production system, which was unusually advanced for its time.
Steam-powered equipment was introduced during the 1850s, allowing the distillery to expand as demand for genever increased.
The spirit became closely associated with coal miners and textile workers throughout the region. It was traditionally consumed neat or added to coffee in a preparation known locally as bistouille.
Production reached its historical peak during the 1930s, and Claeyssens genever received recognition at the Brussels International Exhibition in 1935.
The traditional stoneware jug preserves a visual connection with this regional heritage.
The current Wambrechies stoneware expression is made from a mixture of rye and malted barley.
The grains are milled and cooked before fermentation. Fresh yeast is used during a fermentation period of approximately 48 hours, converting the available sugars into alcohol.
The resulting liquid is distilled twice in copper stills. Juniper berries are added during the second distillation, introducing the botanical character associated with genever.
The finished spirit has an expressive malt aroma, reflecting its cereal origins.
On the palate, it displays a relatively dry texture, with a persistent finish characterised by balanced spice and juniper-derived notes.
The stoneware edition is less alcoholic than the classic Wambrechies genever traditionally bottled at 49% ABV.
It can be served chilled as an aperitif or digestif. Its combination of malt and juniper also makes it suitable for cocktails, particularly those seeking a more cereal-driven alternative to gin.
Following the acquisition of the business by T.O.S Distillerie in 2019, production was progressively reorganised, with distilling activities returning to the historic Wambrechies site in 2023.
The 70 cl stoneware jug remains one of the most recognisable presentations of this traditional spirit, connecting modern production with more than two centuries of northern French distilling history.
