G. Wanner Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut is a Champagne made entirely from Chardonnay grapes sourced from Bisseuil and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, two villages in the Champagne region of France. Produced by winemaker Pierre Hugot, this cuvée combines the aromatic qualities of Chardonnay with a particularly low dosage.
The wine contains just 1.5 grams of sugar per litre, placing it in the Extra Brut category. This limited dosage allows the natural balance of the wine to remain prominent while preserving its fresh character.
The first aromas are floral, accompanied by delicate blood orange zest. After a few minutes in the glass, the bouquet develops notes of freshly baked bread, peach and mango.
On the palate, the Champagne offers a generous fruit character, with orange flavours and a distinctive hint of cherry stone. The finish is long, with a subtle note of orange peel adding freshness and gentle bitterness.
This Blanc de Blancs is suitable for aperitifs but also offers interesting food-pairing possibilities. It works particularly well with river fish, especially when served with carrot or sweet potato purée.
A serving temperature of 10–12°C allows its fruit aromas and subtle bread notes to develop.
Presented in a 75 cl bottle at 12.5% ABV, G. Wanner Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut offers an expression of Chardonnay that combines floral delicacy, ripe fruit and a dry finish.
Description
Champagne G. Wanner Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut is produced by Pierre Hugot, a Champagne winemaker whose approach to Chardonnay highlights both aromatic richness and freshness. The cuvée is made from an assemblage of Chardonnay grapes grown in Bisseuil and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, two villages associated with the Champagne vineyards around the Marne Valley.
The use of Chardonnay alone places this wine in the Blanc de Blancs category. In Champagne, this grape variety is valued for its floral and citrus aromas, its freshness and its ability to develop greater complexity through the traditional sparkling-wine production process.
The distinction of G. Wanner Extra Brut lies partly in its dosage. With just 1.5 g/l of sugar, the wine is positioned at the drier end of the Extra Brut category. This low dosage allows the fruit and other aromatic characteristics of the Chardonnay to remain clearly perceptible.
The aromatic profile begins with delicate floral notes and blood orange zest. As the Champagne opens in the glass, aromas of freshly baked bread, peach and mango become more noticeable.
On the palate, the wine reveals a generous expression of orange fruit, accompanied by a subtle cherry-stone nuance. The finish is persistent, with orange peel contributing a delicate bitter edge that balances the ripe fruit character.
The combination of freshness and aromatic generosity makes this Champagne suitable for a variety of food pairings.
As an aperitif, it offers an alternative to more heavily dosed Champagnes. At the table, it can accompany river fish, particularly when prepared with vegetables that have a naturally sweet character.
A pan-fried trout served with carrot purée, a fillet of freshwater fish accompanied by sweet potato or a delicately cooked fish dish with citrus accents would complement its flavour profile.
The producer's recommended serving temperature is between 10 and 12°C. This slightly warmer temperature than that often used for aperitif Champagne helps reveal the wine's floral aromas, ripe fruit and bread notes.
A white wine glass can be used to allow the bouquet to develop, particularly as the Champagne gradually warms in the glass.
G. Wanner Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut demonstrates how Chardonnay from different Champagne villages can be combined to produce a sparkling wine with a distinctive balance of floral aromas, fruit concentration and a dry finish.
Its low dosage, the use of 100% Chardonnay and the contribution of Bisseuil and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ grapes are central to the identity of this cuvée.
