Jean-Claude Boisset Vosne-Romanée 2020 is a red Burgundy wine made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes grown in the Côte de Nuits.
The wine combines fruit from two distinct vineyard plots: Les Vigneux, in the northern part of Vosne-Romanée near Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and Les Jacquines, situated further south towards Nuits-Saint-Georges.
The vines are approximately 46 years old and grow on limestone scree and marl soils, with east and south-east exposures.
The grapes were hand-harvested on 27 and 28 September 2020, carefully sorted and fermented using indigenous yeasts. The winemaking process included 30% whole bunches and a 24-day maceration.
The wine was aged for fifteen months on its lees in French oak barrels, with 33% new oak.
It displays a deep ruby colour and aromas of fresh red berries, sweet spices and subtle smoky notes. The palate is concentrated yet elegant, with a mineral character and refined structure.
Only 1,781 bottles were produced. The wine was bottled in December 2021 without fining and with very light filtration.
Its structure makes it a suitable match for roasted pigeon, beef fillet and poultry with mushrooms.
Description
Jean-Claude Boisset Vosne-Romanée 2020 is a village-appellation red wine produced in the Côte de Nuits, one of Burgundy's most celebrated Pinot Noir regions.
Vosne-Romanée lies between Vougeot and Nuits-Saint-Georges and is internationally recognised for its exceptional vineyard heritage. Although the village contains famous Grand Cru sites, this Jean-Claude Boisset bottling is classified as Vosne-Romanée Village rather than Premier Cru or Grand Cru.
The wine comes from two named plots, Les Vigneux and Les Jacquines, which contribute different aspects of the village's terroir.
Les Vigneux lies in the northern part of the appellation, on a gentle slope near the Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru. Les Jacquines is located further south, towards Nuits-Saint-Georges.
The vines have an average age of 46 years and are planted in soils composed of limestone scree and marl. Their east and south-east exposures contribute to the ripening conditions of the Pinot Noir.
The 2020 growing season was characterised by warm conditions and concentrated grapes. Jean-Claude Boisset's winemaking team reported deeply coloured red wines with substantial tannins and good acidity.
Harvesting for this cuvée took place on 27 and 28 September 2020. The grapes were picked by hand and sorted both in the vineyard and at the winery.
The fruit was transferred into fermentation vessels by gravity to preserve berry integrity. Some of the grapes were destemmed, while 30% whole bunches were included during maceration.
Maceration lasted 24 days, beginning with four days at 12°C. Fermentation was carried out exclusively with indigenous yeasts, without added sulphur during vinification. Three punch-downs were performed.
After fermentation, the wine was matured for fifteen months on its lees without racking. French oak barrels were used, including 33% new oak.
The barrels received a prolonged, low-temperature toast intended to provide subtle oak influence without overpowering the Pinot Noir.
Bottling took place by gravity in December 2021. The wine was not fined and underwent only very light filtration. Total production amounted to 1,781 bottles.
The finished wine displays a deep ruby colour. Fresh red-fruit aromas are complemented by sweet spices and smoky nuances. On the palate, it offers concentration, minerality and an elegant structure.
According to the producer, the 2020 vintage received 93 points in the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France 2023 and 96 points from James Suckling.
The suggested ageing potential is approximately seven to twelve years, depending on storage conditions.
This Vosne-Romanée is well suited to roasted poultry, pigeon, veal and carefully prepared beef dishes. A serving temperature of around 15–16°C should help preserve its fruit character and balance.
