Discover the Maranges 1er Cru 2023 from Maison Joseph Drouhin, a Burgundy red wine made exclusively from Pinot Noir. Situated at the southern tip of the Côte de Beaune, the Maranges appellation benefits from clay-limestone soils that contribute to this cru’s distinctive character. Its bright red colour heralds an intense nose, characterised by red fruits, wild notes and undergrowth. On the palate, its assertive structure is balanced by a generous body and a lingering, aromatic finish. This Premier Cru is the perfect accompaniment to red meats, roast duck and slow-cooked dishes.
Description
The Maranges 1er Cru 2023 from Maison Joseph Drouhin is a fine example of the character of the red wines of the Côte de Beaune. This Burgundian appellation is situated at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, near Santenay. Its well-exposed slopes and clay-limestone soils provide an ideal setting for the expression of Pinot Noir, the sole grape variety in this cuvée.
Maison Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880, seeks to achieve finesse, balance and respect for each terroir in its wines. For this Maranges Premier Cru, the grapes are harvested by hand into perforated crates, then sorted if necessary. Vinification involves maceration and fermentation for two to three weeks in small open vats, with punching down and pumping over. Indigenous yeasts contribute to the natural course of fermentation and the wine’s expression.
Ageing in French oak barrels, including a proportion of new oak, adds complexity without masking the fruit. The estate states that this cuvée is aged for 14 to 16 months.
On tasting, the colour is a bright, luminous red. The intense nose combines fruity aromas with notes of undergrowth and the wild. On the palate, it offers generous body, a firm structure and lovely lingering aromas. Still firm in its youth, the wine gains roundness with age.
Serve this Maranges 1er Cru 2023 at around 16 °C with braised beef, duck breast, roast poultry or game in sauce. It can be enjoyed after a few years’ ageing to allow its aromas to develop.
