The Château Hostens-Picant Cuvée des Demoiselles 2018 is a fine dry white wine from the Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, produced with the guidance of Stéphane Derenoncourt. Its blend of 65 per cent Sauvignon, 30 per cent Sémillon and 5 per cent Muscadelle reveals a beautiful aromatic richness, combining ripe citrus, white flowers and exotic fruits. Fermented and aged in 400-litre barrels for 9 to 10 months, then matured on its lees with bâtonnage, this Bordeaux white combines fullness, freshness and complexity. A gastronomic wine well worth discovering.
Description
The Château Hostens-Picant Cuvée des Demoiselles 2018 exemplifies the potential of Bordeaux’s great dry white wines. Hailing from the Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, this estate’s signature cuvée is crafted from a plot-by-plot selection of the finest clay-limestone and clay-flint terroirs. The 2018 vintage benefits from a precise blend: 65% Sauvignon, 30% Sémillon and 5% Muscadelle.
The Sauvignon brings an intense aromatic expression, dominated by ripe citrus fruits and white flowers. The Sémillon rounds the blend out with hints of stone fruit and tropical notes, whilst the Muscadelle adds to the complexity of the bouquet. The result is a dry white wine that is both expressive and structured, designed for the table as much as for careful tasting.
The winemaking and ageing processes play a key role in shaping its identity. Following alcoholic fermentation in barriques, the wine is aged for 9 to 10 months in 400-litre casks. Ageing on lees and regular stirring (bâtonnage) promote a full-bodied texture and a harmonious palate, whilst preserving the fruit’s expression. Since 2004, the estate has benefited from the advice of Stéphane Derenoncourt and his team, who support the estate in vineyard management and winemaking decisions.
At the table, this 2018 Cuvée des Demoiselles pairs particularly well with scallops, fish in sauce, white meats and veal blanquette. It also complements certain cheeses, particularly those with a creamy texture. To appreciate its nuances, serve it at around 12 to 13 °C.
With its meticulous ageing, traditional Bordeaux blend and unique terroir, this wine is an excellent choice for lovers of fine white wines. The 2018 vintage deserves careful tasting, taking into account its development in the bottle.
