With this Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru Les Duresses 2022, Domaine Lafouge has produced a refined red wine from the Côte de Beaune. Made from 100 per cent Pinot Noir, this cuvée expresses the character of a marl-limestone terroir renowned for its wines of character. The intense ruby colour is followed by a generous nose of cherry and ripe red and black fruits, accompanied by notes of liquorice and spices. On the palate, it is velvety and structured by fine tannins, retaining a lovely freshness. A great Burgundy to enjoy with red meat, roast poultry or a mushroom dish.
Description
At the heart of Burgundy’s wine-growing region, the Auxey-Duresses appellation is situated in the Côte de Beaune, between Meursault and Saint-Romain. Domaine Lafouge, a family-run estate based in the village of Auxey-Duresses, cultivates plots there that are renowned for their ability to produce structured and expressive red wines. The Premier Cru ‘Les Duresses’ vineyard is one of the appellation’s most iconic terroirs.
This 2022 vintage is made from 100 per cent Pinot Noir, the flagship grape variety of Burgundy’s great red wines. The plot benefits from a favourable aspect and stony marl-limestone soils, which contribute to the balance between fruit ripeness, structure and freshness. The estate’s winemaking aims to preserve the grape variety’s finesse whilst expressing the terroir’s character.
Visually, the wine displays a deep, brilliant ruby colour. The nose reveals a complex bouquet of cherry and ripe red and black fruits, complemented by notes of liquorice, spices and forest floor. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet elegant. Fine, silky tannins underpin the fruity aromas, whilst a pleasant freshness lingers on the palate. The lingering finish reveals mineral and spicy nuances.
This Premier Cru can be enjoyed after aeration from its early years, but it also has good ageing potential when stored in the right conditions. To enjoy it to the full, serve it at around 16 °C, after decanting if necessary.
At the table, it pairs well with a fillet of beef, duck breast, a roast rack of lamb or free-range poultry. Mushroom-based dishes, such as a forest-style risotto, will also bring out its woodland nuances. Burgundy enthusiasts will find this a Pinot Noir that is at once generous, precise and representative of the Côte de Beaune.
