Byrrh Grand Quinquina: a French wine-based aperitif with a distinctive bitter edge
Made in Thuir, in the Roussillon region of southern France, Byrrh Grand Quinquina belongs to the long tradition of French wine-based aperitifs. The Byrrh story began in the nineteenth century with brothers Simon and Pallade Violet, who developed a blend combining Roussillon wines, mistelles, quinquina bark and a selection of aromatic plants and spices.
The drink displays a deep ruby-red colour. Its nose brings together muscat-like aromas, ripe and preserved red fruits, dried-fruit nuances and hints of wood. On the palate, a generous, fruity wine character meets the firm bitterness of quinquina. Spicy notes add complexity, while the rounded texture balances the bitter finish.
At 18% ABV, this 75 cl bottle is well suited to aperitif occasions. Serve it chilled, neat or over ice. For a refreshing long drink, combine it with tonic water and a twist of orange or lemon. Its wine-based structure and aromatic bitterness also make it an interesting ingredient in cocktails, particularly in recipes built around bittersweet flavours.
Description
Byrrh Grand Quinquina: a historic aperitif from the Roussillon wine tradition
Byrrh Grand Quinquina is a French wine-based aperitif associated with Thuir, in the Roussillon region of the Pyrénées-Orientales. The brand was established in the nineteenth century by brothers Simon and Pallade Violet, whose approach combined regional wines with aromatic ingredients to create a distinctive aperitif. Quinquina bark remains central to the drink’s identity, providing its characteristic bitter flavour.
The recipe combines selected quinquina bark with other plants and spices. Wines enriched with muscat mistelles contribute a fruity, rounded character, while the aromatic blend brings depth and complexity. The result is neither a conventional red wine nor a simple bitter: it brings together a wine-led structure, preserved-fruit flavours and a firm botanical bitterness.
In the glass, Byrrh Grand Quinquina shows a dark ruby-red colour. The nose offers muscat-like aromas, ripe and candied red fruits, dried-fruit notes and a subtle woody character. On the palate, the fruit provides richness and roundness, balanced by a pronounced quinquina bitterness. Spicy nuances extend the finish and reinforce its distinctive aperitif style.
Bottled at 18% ABV in a 75 cl format, Byrrh Grand Quinquina is best served chilled. Enjoy it neat, over ice, or with a twist of orange or lemon. Adding tonic water creates a refreshing long drink, while its wine-based depth and bittersweet profile make it suitable for cocktails with gin, whisky or other spirits.
